Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, BJ Penn! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, James Stevenson! The judges for this bout are George Francis, Chris Downing and Frank Dennis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Stevenson closes this distance looking for a takedown but Penn circles away. Stevenson shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Penn sprawls well. Penn wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Stevenson gets slowly back to his feet. Stevenson gets caught flat footed, as Penn shoots in with a quick takedown into guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Penn drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Penn jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Penn is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Stevenson is striking off his back. Penn thinks nothing of it though and passes easily into half guard. The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Stevenson wants to get back to full guard. Stevenson is in trouble now - Penn has advanced to mount!
That's one minute gone in the round. Penn avoids the attempt from Stevenson to control. Penn looking to control and managing it successfully. Penn is giving the impression that he's looking to ground and pound but he switches suddenly into a beautiful far side armbar! Stevenson is forced to tap! Great finish!
