PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Lincoln Hughes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Steve Lucas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hughes comes to the cage accompanied by Beat It. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Lincoln Hughes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Steve Lucas!
The judges for this bout are Richard Clark, Steven Brown and Daniel Bishop.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lucas stuffs the takedown attempt from Hughes. Hughes gets slowly back to his feet.
Lucas looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!
Lucas doesn't manage to clinch there - Hughes circles away.
Hughes shoots for a takedown but Lucas saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Hughes fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Lucas avoids it really well and circles away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Lincoln Hughes. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Hughes changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Lucas tries to avoid it but Hughes manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Lucas to the ground. Lucas escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Hughes fails with a takedown attempt.
Hughes looks to clinch

and Lucas counters with a nice double leg into side control. Hughes won't be happy with that.
Hughes can't do much from the bottom here.
Lucas is looking to take a break and control but Hughes is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Hughes is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Lucas's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Hughes kicks off Lucas and gets to his feet.
Hughes closes the distance looking to clinch

and Lucas counters with a shoot takedown. Hughes fights it but they end up in guard.
Hughes wants to stand and escape but Lucas is having none of it.
Hughes looking for a sweep. Not yet Hughes, not yet.
Lucas tries to free his leg and advance position but Hughes is retaining full guard.

Hughes has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Lucas off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Hughes shoots and misses

and Lucas counters by moving into the clinch.

Lucas breaks from the clinch.
Hughes blocks the body kick.
Hughes misses with a takedown

so Lucas counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Lucas wants to get up but he can't break Hughes's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Hughes uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Hughes gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Lucas counters by clinching up.
Lucas drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Hughes gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Lucas has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Hughes clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Lucas is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Hughes knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Hughes for a finish.
Lucas really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Hughes. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Lucas is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Hughes defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.
Lucas trying to secure his dominant position for a moment - making sure Hughes doesn't escape.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Lucas is looking to control Hughes but Hughes is wriggling around and keeping busy.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Oooh a big shot gets through from Lucas. Many more shots like that and the referee will have to think about stepping in!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Hughes misses with a takedown

so Lucas counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Hughes is looking to stand up but Lucas isn't so interested in that idea.
Hughes trying to control the position.
Lucas wants to get up but he can't break Hughes's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Lucas lands a couple of digs.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Hughes trying to keep a closed guard but Lucas is proving a slippery customer.
Lucas wants to stand but Hughes is controlling his posture from full guard.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Lucas closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Hughes sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Lucas wants to lay and pray for a moment but Hughes keeps working.
Hughes wants to get back to his feet.
Lucas wants to get back to his feet.
Lucas thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Hughes's head.

Hughes makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!
Hughes tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Lucas paws at him with a jab and circles away.

and Lucas counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Hughes wants to stand but Lucas is controlling the position.
Lucas tries to stand but Hughes is controlling from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Lucas is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.

Lucas got a little sloppy there for a moment and Hughes has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Lucas has managed to get both his arms back between Hughes's legs - danger averted.
Lucas is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Lucas wants to stand but Hughes has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Steve Lucas showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Hughes fails with the takedown

and Lucas counters by clinching up.
Lucas prevents Hughes from breaking the clinch.
Hughes looking to stall.
Hughes is working for takedown but Lucas is calmly controlling the position for now.

Lucas decides to pull guard.
Hughes stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Lucas swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Hughes in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Lucas trying to control the position here.
Hughes wants to control from the top but Lucas keeps moving.

Lucas wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Lucas escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Hughes gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Lucas looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Lucas wants to get back to his feet but Hughes is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Hughes wants to clinch

and Lucas counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Hughes escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Hughes throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Lucas shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Hughes manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Lucas tries to free his leg and advance position but Hughes is retaining full guard.
Hughes is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Lucas prevents Hughes from getting back to his feet.

Hughes is working an open guard so Lucas takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Lucas closes this distance looking for a takedown but Hughes circles away.

Lucas on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
Lucas tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Lucas doesn't manage to clinch there - Hughes circles away.
Lincoln Hughes seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

so Lucas counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Hughes is looking to stand up but Lucas isn't so interested in that idea.
Hughes not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Lucas would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Lucas connects with a couple of short punches.

Lucas slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Lincoln Hughes has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Hughes had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Lucas defends it easily.
Hughes has momentary wrist control but Lucas slips an elbow through the middle.

Steve Lucas comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Lucas has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
