The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Valente shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Gomez manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage. Valente passes Gomez's left leg - he's now in half guard. Valente controlling the pace. Gomez is trying to maintain the position but Valente is very close to passing his half guard. Valente is looking for a kimura but Gomez is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Valente to get the leverage. Gomez holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Valente sitting and controlling from the half guard. Gomez is trying to maintain the position but Valente is very close to passing his half guard. Valente trying to control from half guard but Gomez is working away. Gomez is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Gomez is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Valente defends well. Valente trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Gomez is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Gomez is looking to advance position but Valente won't allow it. Valente wants to control but Gomez is keeping busy and won't allow it. Gomez wants to advance to full mount but Valente doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead.

Gomez is trying to move to mount but Valente reverses beautifully and ends up in Gomez's guard. Valente is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Gomez is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
That's four minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Gomez looking for a guillotine here but Valente defends easily.

That was a close round but I would say that Mark Gomez will probably get the nod. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!
Gomez drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Valente tries to buck Gomez off but Gomez is having none of it. Valente regains half guard. Gomez will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Gomez has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount. Gomez wants to control the pace but Valente is squirming around nicely. Valente is working to get back to half guard.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Valente shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Gomez napping and manages to drive through into side control! Gomez controls the position for a moment.

Valente feints and as Gomez raises his hands in defense, Valente changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Gomez lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Valente! Gomez trying to control but he's not successful this time. Gomez goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Valente is on top in guard.

Valente gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Gomez counters with a single leg into guard. Valente didn't expect that. Valente takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Valente keeping moving, preventing Gomez from controlling successfully. Valente is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
