Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jesus Mendes! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Daiki Nakamura! The judges for this bout are , and .
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Nakamura shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Mendes as he avoids it easily. Nakamura will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Mendes is looking to slow Nakamura down with leg kicks. Nakamura fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Mendes avoids it really well and circles away. Nakamura has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Mendes. Mendes wants to slow Nakamura down by chopping away at his legs. Nakamura checks a low kick from Mendes. Nakamura tries to clinch up but Mendes circles away and keeps his distance. Mendes throws a nice inside leg kick. Nakamura misses with the combination.
An inside leg kick lands from Mendes. Mendes moves into range and lands a nice leg kick. Nakamura scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Nakamura scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Mendes to see if he's OK.
That's one minute gone in the round. Nakamura trying to control the position but Mendes is working away. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Mendes is looking for a sweep. Nakamura is trying to get an arm triangle but Mendes is defending well. Mendes gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Mendes wants to control but Nakamura is keeping busy.
Nakamura uses his free foot to push down on Mendes's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Mendes. Mendes tries to reverse the position but Nakamura maintains control. Mendes tries to hold on but Nakamura pushes him away. Mendes is desperately trying to improve his position but Nakamura has a good base and remains in mount.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mendes wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Nakamura.
Mendes is trying to escape the mount.
Nakamura moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Mendes has worked his arm free - good work by Mendes!
Nakamura wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Mendes, who protects the arm well. Nakamura looks gassed! Mendes manages to get back to half guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Mendes avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Nakamura. Mendes wants to improve his position but Nakamura is controlling well.
Nakamura is just content to waste time from the top position. Mendes takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard. Nakamura has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Mendes to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Nakamura is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Mendes pulls down on the head and he's put Nakamura to sleep! This one is all over!
