PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Rickard Patterson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Frank Sierra (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Frank Sierra was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Rickard Patterson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Frank Sierra!
The judges for this bout are Steve Erwin, Eliza Hachem and Skip Squint.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Sierra takes the fight into the clinch.
Patterson goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Sierra managing to block the knees to the body from Patterson.

Sierra lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sierra is pressing down on Patterson's thigh, looking to free his foot. Patterson is holding on for now.
Well, if Sierra is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Sierra's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Patterson is looking for a sweep. Sierra is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Sierra throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Patterson is not content to let Sierra control the position.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Patterson stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Patterson wants it to stay on the feet.
Sierra tries to clinch there but Patterson circles away.
Patterson is looking to clinch.

Sierra bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Sierra is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Sierra cracks Patterson with a big elbow.

Sierra looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

Sierra landing a few strikes.
Sierra trying to control the action but Patterson is working from the bottom.
Patterson avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Sierra.
Patterson is not content to let Sierra control the position.
Sierra might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Patterson kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Patterson is trying to escape the position but Sierra is controlling the position.

Sierra is trying to get an arm triangle but Patterson is defending well.
Patterson wants to control but Sierra postures up.

Sierra is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Patterson knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Patterson tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Sierra counters with a nice double leg into guard.

Patterson is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Sierra is aware though and is defending well.
Sierra makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Sierra is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Sierra advances position into side control!

Sierra tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Sierra looks gassed!
Patterson is looking to regain half guard here but Sierra keeps moving and retains side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Frank Sierra dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Patterson attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.

Sierra misses with a takedown attempt - Patterson sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Sierra closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Patterson regains full guard. Nicely done.
Sierra landing with the ground and pound.
Sierra looking to sit in guard and control but Patterson gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Sierra is pulling down on Patterson's head. It's preventing any offense from Patterson, at least for the moment.
Patterson is looking to advance position but Sierra has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!
Sierra mounts Patterson! Really nice guard pass there!

Sierra goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Patterson turns into him and now he's in Sierra's guard.
Patterson wants to control from the top but Sierra keeps moving.

Sierra is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

Sierra is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Sierra looking to hit a scissor sweep but Patterson is one step ahead there.
Patterson tries to free his leg and advance position but Sierra is retaining full guard.
Patterson has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Sierra is looking to clinch but Patterson is avoiding it.
Patterson stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
Patterson tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Patterson fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Sierra looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Patterson throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.

Patterson feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Patterson postures up in Sierra's guard and throws a big left but Sierra blocks it.
Patterson cracks Sierra with a solid left hand.
Sierra has control of Patterson's left arm, preventing Patterson from doing any damage.
Patterson wants to control from the top but Sierra keeps moving.
Sierra keeping full guard, as Patterson tries to pass.

Sierra uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Patterson tries to clinch up

and Sierra counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Frank Sierra showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

Patterson tries to throw a body punch but Sierra avoids it by throwing Patterson back against the cage.
Patterson unloads a knee to the mid-section. Sierra lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh.

Patterson tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Sierra's elbow.
Sierra blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
Patterson misses with a punch to the body.
Sierra goes for a takedown in the clinch but Patterson prevents it.
A right handed body shot lands from Patterson.
A left hand lands to the body for Patterson.
Patterson misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Sierra.
Patterson tries to land knees in the clinch but Sierra avoids the damage to the body.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Sierra blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Patterson lands a nice looking hook to the body, against the cage.
Sierra prevents a body shot from Patterson.
Patterson tries a body shot but Sierra blocks it.

Patterson putting his Muay Thai to good use. He has Sierra in a tight clinch and is doing some damage with knees to the body.
Patterson tries to throw a body punch but Sierra avoids it by throwing Patterson back against the cage.

Sierra jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Patterson walks away with a smile on his face. Sierra gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Patterson misses with an attempted mid kick.
Sierra blocks a low kick nicely.
Patterson throws a leg kick that is checked
and Sierra counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Patterson is lucky that one didn't land flush.

Patterson shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Sierra slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
Sierra has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Patterson is working away from the top position though.
Sierra is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Patterson scores with a couple of nice shots.

Sierra regains full guard. Nicely done.
Patterson missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Sierra is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Sierra lands with a kick to the temple. Patterson shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"

Rickard Patterson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Frank Sierra.
Sierra is not content to let Patterson control the position.
Sierra can't do much from the bottom here.
Frank Sierra is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Sierra is looking for a sweep.
Sierra sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Patterson is keen to just control but Sierra is a slippery customer.
Patterson wants to pass the guard but Sierra is defending well.
Patterson not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Frank Sierra has got the better of the ground game so far.
Patterson drops an elbow to the side of Sierra's head.

Rickard Patterson has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Sierra won't allow Patterson to pass to mount.

Rickard Patterson showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Sierra has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
