Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the featherweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
9 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jeremy Johnson! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Hank Ryhmes! The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Wesley Smith and George Francis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Johnson is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Ryhmes's half guard. Johnson drops an elbow to the side of Ryhmes's head. Johnson lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Johnson slips a nice elbow through Ryhmes's hands, connecting with Ryhmes's forehead. Ryhmes makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Ryhmes. Johnson trying to control the position from guard on top but Ryhmes is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Johnson distracts Ryhmes with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm. Johnson postures up in Ryhmes's guard and throws a big left but Ryhmes blocks it. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Ryhmes is on top in guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Ryhmes prevents Johnson from getting back to his feet.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ryhmes trying to control but Johnson is working from the bottom. Ryhmes not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. Ryhmes wants to stand and escape but instead Johnson has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard. Hammerfist, elbow! yells Johnson's corner. There ya go! There ya go! Johnson lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard. Johnson keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Ryhmes's head. Johnson stops Ryhmes from standing up.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Johnson throws a big right hand that misses. Johnson slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Johnson in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time. Johnson scores with a couple of short elbows. Johnson prevents Ryhmes from escaping the position. Johnson cracks Ryhmes with a big right hand but Ryhmes just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Johnson working the head with strikes. Ryhmes parries the strikes from Johnson easily there. Johnson is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Ryhmes to escape.
Johnson is putting a hurting on Ryhmes here, landing some big shots from side control. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Ryhmes struggling a bit here. Ryhmes looks gassed! Ryhmes takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
Ryhmes is rocked! Johnson cracks Ryhmes with a big elbow. Oh, he's hurt! Johnson immediately mounts and start dropping bombs! Ryhmes is done! The referee jumps in and saves him from any more punishment - a quick and decisive finish by Johnson!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:04 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Jeremy Johnson! Jeremy Johnson retains his featherweight title!
