PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Barry Montalo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ian Baer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 2 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Barry Montalo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Ian Baer!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Shimada, Shigeki Sano and Yasuomi Hirokawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Montalo connects with a nice looking jab.
Montalo throws a nice looking combination but Baer bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Montalo closes this distance looking for a takedown but Baer circles away.
Nice takedown defense from Baer. No joy for Montalo on that attempt.
Baer fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Montalo moves into the clinch.

Baer breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Nice sprawl there from Montalo as Baer shoots in.
Baer bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Montalo doesn't manage to clinch there - Baer circles away.

Barry Montalo has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ian Baer.

Baer drops down looking for an ankle pick but Montalo pulls his leg out and moves away.

The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

Montalo looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Baer scores a takedown into full mount!
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Baer fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Montalo tries to hold on but Baer postures up.

Baer is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Baer content to control rather than advance.
Baer prevents Montalo from improving his position.

Montalo could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Montalo misses with a strike from the bottom.
Baer wants to lay and pray for a moment but Montalo keeps working.

Baer blocks the strikes from Montalo.

Montalo is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Baer pulls his head out easily.
Montalo is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Montalo works his way to full guard. Good work.

Montalo is looking for a triangle but Baer pushes his legs off easily.
Montalo throws some sloppy strikes off his back.

Montalo working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Baer doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Baer manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Montalo bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Baer's guard.

Oooh a lovely combination from Baer sends Montalo down but not out. Baer dives into side control looking to finish.

Baer happy to just control the position for now.
Oh Montalo is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Baer wants to stand but Montalo is controlling his arm.
Montalo seems to have got his legs back now.
Montalo tries to get back to half guard but can't.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Barry Montalo will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

The fight stays on the outside here - Baer looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Montalo throws a hook to the side of Baer's head but Baer sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Montalo stuffs the takedown.
Montalo throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Baer's waist but Baer gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Montalo off to one side.
Montalo takes a body punch but keeps moving.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Baer closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Baer looks up at the clock and then as Montalo takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Baer smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!

Montalo is looking to sinch up a triangle. Baer throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Montalo's body to avoid the submission. Montalo has instead reached around Baer's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Montalo arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:54 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Barry Montalo!
