PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kayke Lira (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jack Matthews (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Kayke Lira!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Jack Matthews!
The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, James Glass and Richard Clark.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lira takes a swing at Matthews's ribcage but misses.
Matthews tries to score a power double leg takedown but Lira sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Matthews somewhat.
Lira shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Matthews defends it nicely.
Matthews should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Lira takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.


It looks like Kayke Lira has been cut.
The fight stays on the outside here - Matthews looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
A head kick misses from Matthews.
Lira tries to close the distance and clinch up but Matthews swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Matthews lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Matthews.

Lira feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Lira tries to free his leg and advance position but Matthews is retaining full guard.

Matthews wants to get back to his feet but Lira is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Lira will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Matthews escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Lira gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Lira slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Matthews avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
The fighters circling - Lira throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Matthews changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Lira tries to avoid it but Matthews manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Lira to the ground. Lira escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Kayke Lira has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jack Matthews.

Lira has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Matthews off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.

Matthews bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Matthews drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Matthews jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Matthews stops Lira from standing up.
Matthews trying to control the position from guard on top but Lira is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Lira is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Matthews misses with a body kick.

Lira shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Matthews is trying to control the position but Lira postures up.

Lira drops back, looking for a kneebar! Matthews looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Matthews looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Matthews!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Lira wants to control but Matthews postures up.

Matthews thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Lira is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Matthews is controlling him well.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Matthews wants to stand but Lira is controlling his arm.
Lira can't do much from the bottom here.

Matthews wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Lira, who protects the arm well.
Matthews tries to advance to mount but Lira denies him.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Matthews scores with a kick to the midsection.
A combination from Matthews does no damage.
Matthews throws a body kick that misses.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Lira.
Matthews is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Lira closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Lira escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Lira stuffs the takedown attempt from Matthews. Matthews gets slowly back to his feet.
Matthews shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Lira defends it nicely.

Matthews tries to keep at a distance but Lira has taken the fight into the clinch.
Lira is working for takedown but Matthews is calmly controlling the position for now.
Matthews is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
A frustrated look appears on Matthews's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Matthews is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Lira pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Matthews drops down looking for an ankle pick but Lira pulls his leg out and moves away.

Matthews gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Lira stands up from guard. Let's bang!

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Matthews closes this distance looking for a takedown but Lira circles away.
Lira will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Lira wants to free his trapped foot but Matthews is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Lira decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.

Lira seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Matthews for as long as he can get away with.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Lira shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Lira was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Matthews wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Lira.
Matthews is desperately trying to improve his position but Lira has a good base and remains in mount.
Jack Matthews has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Kayke Lira is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Lira content just to control the position here.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Lira, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
