PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Pera Pukama (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alfons Oberg (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Alfons Oberg told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Pera Pukama!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Alfons Oberg!
The judges for this bout are Ben Zyskovitsi, Anni Minnemäki and Matti Vanhoillinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Oberg fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Oberg jabs away that one connects to the head of his opponent.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Oberg is defended easily by Pukama.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Pukama.
No luck for Oberg with that takedown attempt.
Pera Pukama has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Alfons Oberg.

Pukama tries to keep at a distance but Oberg has taken the fight into the clinch.
Pukama tries to score a body lock takedown but Oberg shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Oberg controlling the action here for a moment.
Oberg continues to stall. The referee tells him to work or he's going to break them up.
Oberg changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Pukama fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Oberg pushes Pukama up against the cage in a clinch.

Oberg ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Oberg no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Pukama drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Pukama jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Pukama throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Oberg works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Oberg preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Oberg can do anything to dispel that myth.

Pukama thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Oberg stuffs the takedown.
Pukama buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.

Pukama is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Oberg's half guard.
Pukama is breathing heavily.
Pukama wants to free his trapped foot but Oberg is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Pukama has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Pukama seems to be working for a kimura but Oberg defends the submission attempt.
Oberg is controlling Pukama's position as best he can from this difficult position.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Oberg is trying to maintain the position but Pukama is very close to passing his half guard.

Pukama is looking for a kimura but Oberg is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Pukama to get the leverage.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Oberg throws a leg kick but Pukama sees it coming and checks it nicely.
Pukama throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Oberg.
Oberg misses with a takedown attempt - Pukama sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Pukama walks into a left hand.

Pukama shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Pukama is looking to take a break and control but Oberg is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Oberg is looking for a sweep. Pukama is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Pukama has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Pukama looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.
Pukama looking to control but Oberg is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Oberg is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Pukama working for a submission but Oberg is keeping him at bay.

Pukama jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Oberg is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Oberg and Pukama has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Pera Pukama will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Pukama leaves Oberg with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Oberg dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Oberg.
Pukama shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Oberg counters with a nice double leg into side control. Pukama won't be happy with that.

Oberg is trying to get an arm triangle but Pukama is defending well.

Pukama tries to bench press Oberg off him but Oberg keeps the position.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Oberg happy to just control the position for now.

Pukama manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Pukama looking to control but Oberg is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

Oberg really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Pukama. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Pukama is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Oberg has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Oberg!

Pukama throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Oberg escapes and throws Pukama's legs to the side, diving into side control!

Pukama drops back, looking for a kneebar! Oberg looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Oberg looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Oberg!

Alfons Oberg showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Oberg lands a nice leg kick that just misses Pukama's sensitive parts.

Alfons Oberg has got the better of the ground game so far.

Pukama is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Oberg pushes Pukama off and gets back to his feet.
Pukama stuffs the takedown.
Pukama misses with a body kick.

Pukama shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Oberg napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Pukama is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Oberg knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Pukama in side control, throwing shots but Oberg defends.

Pukama is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Oberg is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Oberg bucks up and manages to escape back to his feet!

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Alfons Oberg.
I think Oberg has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
