The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jones tries to clinch up but Mahal circles away and keeps his distance.
Nice body kick from Mahal.
Mahal cracks Jones with a right hand to the side of the head.
Mahal stuffs the takedown attempt from Jones. Jones gets slowly back to his feet.
Danga de danga de dang - Mahal scores with a four punch combination!
Mahal misses with a double jab.
Jones fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Mahal avoids it really well and circles away.
Mahal fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Jones on the side of the head.
Jab, jab by Mahal - just one landing.

Mahal moves into the clinch.
Jones jumps guard but Mahal stands there with Jones around his waist. Jones gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for James J Jones. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Mahal breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Jones changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Mahal looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mahal tries to improve position but can't.
Jones is looking to take a break and control but Mahal is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Mahal manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

Mahal wants to control but Jones is keeping busy.

Mahal looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.

Mahal is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Jones pulls his head out easily.
Mahal regains full guard. Nicely done.
Mahal keeping moving, preventing Jones from controlling successfully.

Mahal is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Mahal working for a triangle but Jones defends it easily.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Jones is sitting in close to Mahal's body. Mahal has gone for a guillotine from the bottom. Oh damn, that looks pretty tight! Jones is panicking - it looks like this one could be all over! Yes, Jones is tapping! That was a very nice submission by Mahal.
