A telegraphed takedown attempt from Van Halen is defended easily by Wright. Wright leaves Van Halen with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Van Halen shoots in and drives through. Wright sprawls well. Jace Wright has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jon Van Halen. Wright misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Wright scores with a one two! Van Halen had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.

Wright is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Van Halen has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Van Halen! Van Halen wants to control from the top but Wright keeps moving. Van Halen must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Van Halen is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. I looks like Van Halen might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Van Halen tries to hold on but Wright postures up. Van Halen is trying to get back to his feet but can't. Van Halen tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Wright is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Van Halen can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Wright is breathing heavily. Van Halen sneaks a leg under to get to half guard. Wright wants to take a breather but Van Halen is having none of it. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Jace Wright dominated that round. The cut man is working on Jon Van Halen's cut. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

so Wright counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility. Van Halen is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Van Halen can't keep his opponent in guard - Wright advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Wright throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Wright is looking for a kimura but Van Halen is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Wright to get the leverage. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Van Halen pushes Wright off and gets back to his feet. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Van Halen shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Wright sprawls well. Wright wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Van Halen gets slowly back to his feet. Van Halen with a lazy takedown attempt
and Wright counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Wright. Jace Wright has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jon Van Halen. Wright tries to land with some ground and pound but misses. Wright in side control lands a decent elbow. Wright misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Van Halen just content to control the position. Wright manages to get one leg in to regain half guard. and Van Halen counters with a nice double leg into side control. Wright won't be happy with that. Wright is looking for a sweep. Van Halen lands a decent elbow from side control. Wright is looking for a sweep. Van Halen landing a few strikes. Wright is looking to regain half guard here but Van Halen keeps moving and retains side control.
Van Halen wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Wright, who protects the arm well. Wright tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Van Halen wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Van Halen slows the pace down.
