PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Derek Brown (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tenken Zangetsu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Zangetsu has chosen Can't be touched as his entrance music. Tenken Zangetsu has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Derek Brown!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Tenken Zangetsu!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Zangetsu scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Zangetsu wants to take a breather but Brown is having none of it.
Zangetsu throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Brown blocking the ground and pound attempt from Zangetsu.
Zangetsu thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Brown's head.

Zangetsu is looking for a kimura but Brown is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Zangetsu to get the leverage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Zangetsu is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Brown sees it coming and defends easily.
Zangetsu thows a big elbow that misses, also allowing Brown to regain full guard.
Zangetsu stops Brown from standing up.

That's one minute gone in the round.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Brown doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Zangetsu counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Brown is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Brown keeping moving, preventing Zangetsu from controlling successfully.
Zangetsu throwing strikes from guard but Brown blocks nicely.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Zangetsu controls from within his opponent's guard.

Zangetsu trying to control but Brown is working from the bottom.
Zangetsu is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Zangetsu with a flurry of punches that miss.
Zangetsu postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Brown has his takedown stuffed

and Zangetsu counters with a takedown into side control.
Zangetsu looks gassed!
Brown stops Zangetsu from passing to mount.
Brown is not content to let Zangetsu control the position.
The referee asks Zangetsu politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Zangetsu prefers to stall for the moment though.

Zangetsu trying to control the position but Brown is working away.
Zangetsu tries to advance to mount but can't.
Brown struggling a bit here.
Zangetsu in side control lands a decent elbow.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tenken Zangetsu dominated that round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Zangetsu shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
and Brown counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Zangetsu tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Brown has advanced to mount. Uh oh.

Zangetsu is breathing heavily.
Zangetsu wants to try and get back to his feet.

Zangetsu is trying to escape the mount.
Brown takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Brown's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Brown fails to move to back control.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Brown content just to control the position here.
Zangetsu is looking to get to half guard.

Brown takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Zangetsu can do anything to dispel that myth.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Derek Brown just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.

Zangetsu rushes Brown and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Zangetsu has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Brown is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Zangetsu is working for takedown but Brown is calmly controlling the position for now.
Derek Brown has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Tenken Zangetsu.
A battle for position here, against the cage.
Brown jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Zangetsu walks away with a smile on his face. Brown gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Brown shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Zangetsu as he jumps to the side.
Brown tries to score a power double leg takedown but Zangetsu sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Brown somewhat.

Zangetsu tries to clinch but fails miserably

so Brown counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Brown is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Brown forces his way into half guard.
Brown controlling the pace.
Zangetsu won't allow Brown to pass to mount.
Brown is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Zangetsu!
Brown content just to control the position here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Derek Brown dominated that second round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Brown tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Zangetsu swivels and escapes.

Zangetsu instigates a clinch.
Brown prevents a takedown attempt there.
Good anti-grappling being displayed by Zangetsu as Brown tries to tie him up.
A frustrated look appears on Brown's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Brown tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Zangetsu gets a trip takedown into half guard.
Zangetsu missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.

Zangetsu is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Brown doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Zangetsu.
Zangetsu takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Brown keeps control of the position for the meantime.
Zangetsu is looking to advance position but Brown won't allow it.
Tenken Zangetsu has got the better of the ground game so far.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Zangetsu throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Zangetsu wants to control but Brown is keeping him busy.
Brown manages to get to full guard.
Zangetsu must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Brown has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Brown lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Zangetsu!
Zangetsu is in all sorts of trouble here.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Zangetsu really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Brown takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Brown prevents Zangetsu from getting the reversal.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Derek Brown.
I think Brown has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
