PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Chuck Pain (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul Rodrigez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chuck Pain had a look across the cage there at his opponent. He definitely means business

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Chuck Pain!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Paul Rodrigez!
The judges for this bout are Albert Achterberg, Paul Aken and Nard Betker.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Pain drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Rodrigez is trying to escape the position but Pain is controlling the position.
Rodrigez is trying to escape and get back to his feet.
You can see the frustration on Rodrigez's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Pain wants to control but Rodrigez is keeping him busy.
Pain remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Rodrigez tries to improve position but can't.
Pain is staying tight to Rodrigez's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Pain wants to control but Rodrigez is keeping him busy.

Rodrigez tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Pain wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Rodrigez throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Pain was covering up waiting for the punch and Rodrigez finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Rodrigez wants to control from the top but Pain keeps moving.

Pain pulls Rodrigez in to control the position.
Rodrigez must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Rodrigez wants to stand but Pain has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Pain is pulling down on Rodrigez's head to control his posture.
Rodrigez stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Pain swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Rodrigez looks gassed!

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Pain gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Rodrigez counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Rodrigez.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Rodrigez postures up.

Pain looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Rodrigez trying to control but Pain is working from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Paul Rodrigez dominated that round.
That's time! Pain's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Pain doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Rodrigez holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Rodrigez changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Pain fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Rodrigez has his takedown stuffed

and Pain counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Rodrigez's guard now.
Rodrigez keeping moving, preventing Pain from controlling successfully.
Pain content to stall in guard here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Pain passes Rodrigez's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Rodrigez is breathing heavily.
Pain perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

Pain works his foot free and advances to mount.
Pain controlling the pace for now.
Pain trying to control but Rodrigez is having none of it.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Chuck Pain just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
Rodrigez gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Pain counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Rodrigez!
Chuck Pain has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Paul Rodrigez.
Pain trying to control but Rodrigez is having none of it.

Pain controlling the position easily from mount.
Rodrigez has given up his back.
Chuck Pain overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
A bit of a pause in the action here. Pain controlling the positon.

Will Pain go for the finish here or will he try and keep control of the position?

The referee stands the fighters back up. Chuck Pain just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.

Rodrigez gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Pain forces his way into half guard.
Pain wants to lay and pray for a moment but Rodrigez keeps working.

Well, if Pain is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Rodrigez wants to control but Pain is keeping busy.

Pain is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Chuck Pain dominated that second round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.



Pain closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Rodrigez did well to prevent Pain getting side control.
Pain seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Rodrigez does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Pain moves into full mount! Rodrigez won't be happy about that!
Pain takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Rodrigez is squirming around, avoiding Pain's attempts to control the action.
Rodrigez is trying to stand but he's just given Pain his back.
Rodrigez takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Rodrigez looking very determined here, making life difficult for Pain.

Pain wants to control but Rodrigez is keeping busy.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Chuck Pain just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.

Pain shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Rodrigez's guard.
Rodrigez can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Pain controls the pace.
Rodrigez wants to get back to his feet but Pain is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Pain advances position into side control!

Pain is working to tighten is grip on Rodrigez's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. Rodrigez has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Pain is really squeezing tight and eventually Rodrigez passes out! Pain breaks the hold and jumps onto the cage to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!
