PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Ray Den (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Peter Mengele (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Mengele's choice of entrance music: Hipster tunes. Ray Den has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ray Den!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Peter Mengele!
The judges for this bout are Marco Blurström, Roosa Järviläinen and Johanna Lukiainen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mengele doesn't manage to clinch there - Den circles away.

Den is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Mengele's half guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Mengele can do anything to dispel that myth.
Mengele is looking to improve his position.
Den controlling the action here.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mengele wants to control but Den is keeping busy.

Mengele moves into full guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Den wants to pass the guard but Mengele is keeping the position.
Den slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Den stopping the sweep attempt from Mengele.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ray Den dominated that round.
That's time! Den's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.



Mengele changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Den looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Den wants to get back to his feet but Mengele drags him back down.
Den wants to control but Mengele postures up.
Den prevents Mengele from moving into mount.
Den dodges the ground and pound from Mengele.

Mengele stands up and beckons Den to his feet.
Den misses with a body kick.

Mengele looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Mengele is looking to work some ground and pound but Den has wrist control.
Den is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

Mengele distracts Den with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Mengele being controlled here momentarily.

Den pushes Mengele off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Mengele shoots and misses

and Den counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Mengele is breathing heavily.
Den slips nicely into half guard.
Den controlling the action here.

Mengele wants to get back to full guard.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Mengele wants to get back to full guard.

Den seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Ray Den just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.

Den closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Mengele wants to improve his position but Den is controlling well.
Den takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Den has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Ray Den will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.



Den shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Mengele napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Mengele is trying to get back to half guard.
Mengele is trying to control Den's posture but Den avoids it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mengele tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Den wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

The referee asks Den politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Den prefers to stall for the moment though.
Mengele is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Den asserts his dominance and retains side control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Mengele trying to remain calm as Den controls from the top position.
Mengele tries to bench press Den off him but Den keeps the position.
Peter Mengele has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Den taking a breather here.
Ray Den is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Mengele is looking to reverse the position.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Mengele is trying to escape the position but Den is controlling the position.
Mengele stops Den from passing to mount.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Ray Den showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Den has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
