PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Freddie Roach (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dave Williams (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Roach kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Master of Puppets. Dave Williams is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Freddie Roach!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Dave Williams!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, George Francis and Alan Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Roach fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Williams throws a right and a left that both miss.
Roach motions for Williams to come forward. Roach throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Roach throws a left and a right that both miss
and Williams counters with a good, hard body kick but Roach shrugs it off.
Williams takes a head kick and keeps coming.

Roach drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Williams manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Roach manages to get himself to full guard.
Williams trying to control the position from guard on top but Roach is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Roach pushes Williams off and gets back to his feet.
Roach scores with a nice right hand.
Roach swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Williams counters with a head kick.

That's one minute gone in the round.
The fight stays on the outside here - Williams looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Williams doesn't manage to clinch there - Roach circles away.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Roach jumps guard but Williams stands there with Roach around his waist. Roach gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Williams prevents the takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Freddie Roach. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Roach has Williams pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Williams manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Roach pushes Williams back against the cage and unloads with a body punch.
Williams tries a knee to the head but he's missed.

Roach manages to break the clinch.
Roach shoots in for a double leg but Williams sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Williams stands up over Roach, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Williams loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Williams has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Williams is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Williams stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Roach swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Williams looks gassed!
Williams passes into half guard.
Roach wants to control but Williams is keeping busy and won't allow it.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Roach lands a jab to Williams's midsection.
A left and a right from Roach both land. Nice combination.
Roach circles away from the clinch attempt

and Roach counters with a nice double leg into guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Roach throwing strikes from guard but Williams blocks nicely.
Roach with a flurry of punches that miss.
Roach makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Roach wants to control from the top but Williams keeps moving.

Roach is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Williams is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Williams has escaped and now he's on top!

Williams drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Williams jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Williams misses with a double jab.
Roach shoots in for a takedown but Williams shows good takedown defense.
Williams tries to clinch

and Roach counters with a shoot takedown. Williams fights it but they end up in guard.
Williams keeping moving, preventing Roach from controlling successfully.

Williams is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Williams is breathing heavily.
Williams wants to pass the guard but Roach is keeping the position.
Roach is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Roach on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Roach tries to get out of the position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
A head kick misses from Roach.

Roach gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Roach has Williams pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Roach pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Williams tumbling to the mat - Roach dives into Williams's guard.
Roach tries to free his leg and advance position but Williams is retaining full guard.
Roach throws a strike but Williams rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Williams advances to half guard.

Roach kicks off Williams and gets to his feet.
Horrible takedown by Roach or perhaps it was just good defense by Williams which made him look bad.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Williams tries to bum rush Roach with a series of wild strikes but Roach uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Williams pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Williams pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Roach swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Williams connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

Roach shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Roach trying to control but Williams is working from the bottom.
Roach stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Williams swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Roach looking to sit in guard and control but Williams gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Williams sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Roach's guard.

Roach is defending against the submission attempts here by Williams.
Williams stops Roach from getting back to his feet.
Williams trying to control from half guard but Roach is working away.
Williams prevents Roach from improving his position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Freddie Roach dominated that second round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Nice uppercut lands for Roach. That snapped Williams's head back.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Roach.
Williams scores with a crisp jab that stopped Roach in his tracks.
Roach shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Williams pinned against the cage. Williams gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Roach drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Williams lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Roach!

Williams throwing shots from mount but they're not landing.

Williams is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Roach has managed to escape the submission attempt.

Williams looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Williams wants to get back to his feet but Roach is holding on tight.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Roach regains half guard.
Williams wants to control but Roach is keeping him busy.
Roach is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.
Roach knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Williams on the ground.
Williams seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Roach does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Roach is defending against the submission attempts here by Williams.
Williams is keen to just control but Roach is a slippery customer.
Roach preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
Roach is looking to improve his position.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Roach misses with a jab, cross combination.

Roach looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Williams!
Williams is working to get back to half guard.
The referee warns Williams that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Freddie Roach showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Roach, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
