Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 6 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ivan Tohump! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 6 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Stanislov Verbukh! The judges for this bout are Valeri Chadov, Vladimir Khabensky and Fedor Mirinova.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Tohump shoots in for a takedown but Verbukh shows good takedown defense. Verbukh is looking to clinch. Verbukh tries to clinch up but Tohump circles away and keeps his distance. Stanislov Verbukh seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Tohump shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Verbukh sprawls well. Verbukh wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Tohump gets slowly back to his feet. Tohump swats away the attempt to clinch by Verbukh. Tohump fails with a takedown attempt from distance. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ivan Tohump. That's going to take a lot out of him. Verbukh gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Tohump counters with a takedown into side control. Verbukh is trying to escape and get back to his feet. Verbukh defending against the ground and pound. Verbukh tries to bench press Tohump off him but Tohump keeps the position. Verbukh takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Verbukh can do anything to dispel that myth. Verbukh is not in a great position here, taking some shots. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Verbukh is looking to reverse the position. Verbukh really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Tohump. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
That's one minute gone in the round. Verbukh is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here. Tohump is looking to take a break and control but Verbukh is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Tohump blocks the strikes from Verbukh.
Verbukh prevents Tohump from moving into mount. Tohump working the ground and pound. Tohump scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Verbukh to see if he's OK. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Tohump cracks Verbukh with an elbow. That is naaassty. Verbukh is pushing Tohump's head away, looking to escape. Tohump manages to hold on to the position though. Tohump trying to control the action but Verbukh is working from the bottom. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Tohump prevents Verbukh from escaping the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Tohump cracks Verbukh with an elbow. That is naaassty. Verbukh tries to bench press Tohump off him but Tohump keeps the position. Verbukh is pushing Tohump's head away, looking to escape. Tohump manages to hold on to the position though. Tohump cracks Verbukh with a big elbow. Tohump has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Verbukh tries to buck Tohump off but Tohump is having none of it. Tohump lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Tohump works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.
Verbukh is rocked! Verbukh is trying to get back to his feet. Tohump wants to lay and pray for a moment but Verbukh keeps working. Tohump scoring with punches from side control. Verbukh taking punishment in the form of punches.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Verbukh is trying to get back to his feet. Tohump gets to mount! Verbukh was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly. Tohump scoring with strikes but Verbukh is staying in there. Tohump lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Verbukh hang on? Tohump raining down shots from the mount! Tohump controlling from the full mount. Tohump looking to control but Verbukh is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Verbukh sneaks a leg under to get to half guard. Tohump works his foot free and advances to mount.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Verbukh sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though. Tohump scoring with strikes to the body and head. Verbukh is trying to stand up here but Tohump is controlling him well. Tohump working the head and body with strikes. Tohump takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists. Tohump is looking to take a break and control but Verbukh is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Verbukh has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Tohump is working away from the top position though. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Tohump seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Tohump is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Ivan Tohump dominated that round. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Tohump misses with a takedown and Verbukh counters by moving into the clinch. Verbukh lands an elbow just above Tohump 's eye. Tohump manages to break the clinch.
Verbukh wants to clinch but Tohump slips to the side and Tohump counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Verbukh! Tohump working away from the top, dropping strikes. Tohump with good strikes from the mount here! Tohump lands a big shot to the head and Verbukh winces in pain. He's tapped out due to strikes!
