Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 1, fighting out of St Petersburg, Jan Mathisen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ilya Porunov!
The judges for this bout are Dmitry Maklakov, Vladimir Khabensky and Aleksei Zolotukhin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Porunov shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Porunov forces Mathisen back against the cage and clinches.
Come on Porunov - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Porunov fails to pull guard.
Porunov throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Mathisen blocks it with crossed arms.
Porunov is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Mathisen pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Jan Mathisen has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ilya Porunov.
Mathisen wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Porunov has him pressed against the cage.
Mathisen drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Porunov gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Porunov is trying to force a seperation but Mathisen has the dominant position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Mathisen pulls guard successfully.
Mathisen is adopting a defensive guard.
Mathisen working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Porunov.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Porunov wants to stand but Mathisen has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Mathisen keeping moving, preventing Porunov from controlling successfully.
Mathisen pulls Porunov in close to prevent any damage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Mathisen preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Porunov must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Porunov thows a big elbow that misses.
Porunov trying to control the position from guard on top but Mathisen is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Porunov shoots in looking for a takedown. Mathisen tries to sprawl out of it but Porunov keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Mathisen manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Porunov slips a jab and a cross from Mathisen.
Mathisen fails to land with a series of punches.
Porunov leaves Mathisen with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Mathisen misses with a jab, cross combination.
Jan Mathisen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Mathisen is breathing heavily.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Porunov with a lazy takedown attempt
and Mathisen counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Mathisen is looking to clinch.
Porunov tries for a takedown but Mathisen circles away easily

so Mathisen counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Mathisen postures up.

Mathisen is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Porunov has a closed guard, preventing Mathisen from standing up.

Porunov had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Mathisen defends it easily.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Mathisen is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Porunov is working an open guard so Mathisen takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
A head kick misses from Porunov.

Mathisen fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Porunov sprawls well initially but Mathisen persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Mathisen is thwarting Porunov's attempts to control the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jan Mathisen dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



Porunov closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Porunov wants to control but Mathisen is keeping him busy.

Porunov stands up.

Mathisen drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Porunov is trying to hold Mathisen in close to prevent damage but Mathisen has managed to pass into half guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Mathisen is taking a breather. Porunov says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Mathisen works his way into full mount!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mathisen controlling the pace for now.
Porunov tries to control Mathisen's body but Mathisen pushes him off. Porunov squirms to his side and now Mathisen has his back!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Porunov just trying to survive but Mathisen is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish.
Mathisen biding his time, looking for the opening.
Porunov trying to control the action but Mathisen just sinks the hooks in.

Mathisen is working on the RNC. He looks like he's got it but Porunov won't tap... Oh, he's out! The ref rips Mathisen off his unconscious opponent!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:01 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Jan Mathisen!
