Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, DJ Penn! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Dirk Zeldenthuis! The judges for this bout are Ben Zyskovitsi, Roosa Järviläinen and Tarja Halkonen.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A telegraphed takedown attempt from Penn is defended easily by Zeldenthuis. Zeldenthuis connects with a right hand. Penn shakes it off. Zeldenthuis cracks Penn with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business. Zeldenthuis shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Penn is trying to defend but Zeldenthuis finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. Penn trying to control but Zeldenthuis postures up.
Zeldenthuis missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Zeldenthuis is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Penn defends it well. Zeldenthuis wants to pass the guard but Penn is defending well. Zeldenthuis is taking a breather. Penn says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
That's one minute gone in the round. Zeldenthuis prevents Penn from improving his position. Zeldenthuis trying to pass the guard but Penn defending well. Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Zeldenthuis in particular looking to stall. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Zeldenthuis is pressing down on Penn's thigh, looking to free his foot. Penn is holding on for now. Zeldenthuis seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. Penn is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Zeldenthuis's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Zeldenthuis's back! Penn looking for the RNC.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Zeldenthuis turns into Penn and is now in his guard.
Zeldenthuis pushes down on Penn's leg and manages to get into half guard. Penn knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Zeldenthuis on the ground. Zeldenthuis not doing much here.
Zeldenthuis is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Penn! Penn keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Penn is breathing heavily. Zeldenthuis lands a big elbow.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Penn tries to get back to half guard but can't. A nice elbow there by Zeldenthuis. Zeldenthuis has hold of an arm here, looking to extend it. He's committed to the armbar attempt here! Will he get it?! Yes! Penn is forced to tap!
