Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
10 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jack Arlovski! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
7 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Emmanuel Vargas! The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Seu Braga and Alexandre Firmino.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Vargas fails with an attempt to clinch.
Vargas throws a head kick that misses. Arlovski blocks a head kick by Vargas.
Arlovski scores to the head and body with a nice combination! Vargas tries to clinch up but Arlovski circles away and keeps his distance. The fight stays on the outside here - Vargas looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Arlovski throws a good cross that connects.
Arlovski closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Vargas did well to prevent Arlovski getting side control. Arlovski seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. Arlovski working over Vargas with some ground and pound. Vargas looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. Arlovski lands with a punch from half guard. Arlovski working the head and body with strikes. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Arlovski drops an elbow to the side of Vargas's head. Arlovski throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Vargas really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Arlovski. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Arlovski throwing shots but Vargas is blocking nicely. Arlovski not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Vargas is looking for a sweep. Arlovski is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Arlovski sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Vargas defending well though. Vargas wants to get back to his feet. Vargas is looking to improve his position.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Arlovski scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business. Emmanuel Vargas seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
That's one minute gone in the round. Arlovski avoids the head kick by Vargas.
Vargas misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Vargas fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Arlovski manages to avoid it. Arlovski keeps the fight on the outside. Arlovski sizes up Vargas with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle. Vargas avoids the body shot from Arlovski.
Arlovski lands the left hand. Arlovski changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Vargas looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Arlovski cracks Vargas with a big elbow. Arlovski working the ground and pound. Vargas prevents Arlovski from moving into mount. Arlovski is working hard here to advance position. Arlovski cracks Vargas with a big right hand but Vargas just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Vargas is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Arlovski is controlling him well. Arlovski throws an elbow but Vargas slips to the side and avoids it well. Vargas on the wrong end of some ground and pound. Arlovski has an Americana. Vargas didn't react quickly enough there and he's in big trouble now! He tries to squirm out but is forced to tap! Arlovski is delighted and gyrates in front of the ring girls. They seem to like the attention - it'll be interesting to see if Arlovski hooks up with any of them at the after show party.
