Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Matthias Hughes! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Vuvu Zela! The judges for this bout are Donatello Bradman, Skip Squint and Winston Howard.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Zela shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away. Hughes is writhing around trying to get back to his feet. Zela landing punches. Hughes is desperately trying to improve his position but Zela has a good base and remains in mount. Zela looking to finish Hughes with some ground and pound. This is bad for Hughes! Zela scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Zela lands a heavy elbow. Zela sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Zela wants to control the pace but Hughes is squirming around nicely. Zela sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Hughes wants to hold on but Zela pushes him away.
That's one minute gone in the round. Hughes slips a leg in and gets back to half guard. Zela seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. Zela seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. Zela is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Well, if Zela is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Hughes looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Hughes on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Hughes tries to get out of the position. Hughes trying to control here.
Zela controlling the pace. Zela wants to take a breather but Hughes is having none of it.
The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Vuvu Zela. Zela shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Hughes napping and manages to drive through into side control! Hughes tries to bench press Zela off him but Zela keeps the position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Zela wants to lay and pray for a moment but Hughes keeps working. Zela taking a breather here. Zela's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige. Hughes misses with an elbow from the bottom.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Hughes is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Zela is looking to take a break and control but Hughes is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Zela scores with a takedown into Hughes's guard. Zela is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position. Hughes keeping moving, preventing Zela from controlling successfully. Hughes pushes a forearm under Zela's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Zela is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!
