Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Carlo Ruis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Derek Cote (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters really staring eachother down here, as Derek Cote enters the cage!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Carlo Ruis! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Derek Cote! The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, Eliza Hachem and Steve Erwin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ruis lands a head shot. Cote scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!
Ruis uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Cote. Cote misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Cote just misses with a punch to the body.
Ruis cracks Cote with a right hand to the side of the head. A right-left combo lands from Ruis. Crunch! Cote slams his shin into Ruis's torso. Ruis tries to close the distance and clinch but Cote swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Cote bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Ruis's head. Ruis tries to clinch but Cote is having none of it. Cote tries to bum rush Ruis with a series of wild strikes but Ruis uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Cote looks to land a body kick but Ruis moved away. A right-left combo lands from Cote. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Cote throws a head kick but Ruis moves out of range.

That's one minute gone in the round. Ruis drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. Ruis advances to half guard. Ruis is trying to control the action in half guard but Cote is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Ruis tries to stand and escape but Cote is controlling the position. Cote trying to control but Ruis postures up.
Cote is trying to avoid being dragged into an even worse position than he's already in but Ruis is staying active. Cote is trying to stand up here but Ruis is controlling him well.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Ruis wants to take a breather but Cote is having none of it.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Ruis fails with the takedown. Ruis jabbing away but nothing is landing. The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Ruis checks a leg kick. Cote stuns Ruis with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range. Cote tries to bum rush Ruis with a series of wild strikes but Ruis uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Ruis throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Cote. Cote misses with a head kick.
Ruis takes a kick to the body and keeps moving. Cote feints and then cracks Ruis's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Ruis down. Cote throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Ruis's head. Ruis wants to clinch. Cote misses with the combination.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Cote lands a glancing blow to the side of Ruis's head. Cote misses with a jab, cross combination.
Cote lands with a kick to the temple. Ruis shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?" A right-left combo lands from Cote. Ruis has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him. An inside leg kick lands from Cote. Ruis moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination. Nice shot lands for Cote. Cote misses with a wild combination.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Ruis fails to land the takedown. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Carlo Ruis. That's going to take a lot out of him. Cote blocks a low kick nicely. Ruis throws a leg kick that misses. Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Ruis!
Cote shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Cote thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Ruis's head. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Cote trying to control the action but Ruis is working from the bottom. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Derek Cote dominated that round. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Cote wants to land a leg kick but Ruis is out of range. A low kick from Ruis is predictable there and Cote counters with a good, hard body kick but Ruis shrugs it off. Ruis tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Cote paws at him with a jab and circles away. Ruis shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Cote as he jumps to the side. Cote jabs Ruis right on the nose. Ruis blinks but takes it well. Cote throws a body kick that misses.

Ruis connects with a good right hand that stumbles Cote. Cote circles away out of range and recomposes himself. Ruis connects with a nice looking jab.
Nice shot by Cote. Ruis shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Ruis trying to control the action but Cote is working from the bottom. Ruis tries to pass the half guard into mount. Cote knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Cote trying to control but Ruis postures up.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Cote pushes Ruis off and gets back to his feet. Nice takedown defense from Cote. No joy for Ruis on that attempt. Ruis has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him. Cote shoots in and drives through. Ruis sprawls well. Ruis swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Cote counters with a leg kick. Cote has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight. Some wild striking there from Ruis.
Ruis misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Carlo Ruis. That's going to take a lot out of him. Ruis wants to clinch up but Cote keeps it at a distance. Cote thows a body shot but no joy. Cote swinging wildly here.

Cote rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Ruis moves out of range and avoids them all easily. Cote thumps Ruis with a low kick. Ruis throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

and Ruis counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. Ruis takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily. Ruis tries to clinch but Cote is having none of it. Ruis shoots in and bounces Cote off the cage to secure the takedown into guard. Cote escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Ruis gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Cote had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Ruis defends it easily. Ruis controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Ruis stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Cote swivels though and keeps the full guard. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Cote is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close second round but I would say that Carlo Ruis will probably get the nod. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!
Cote misses with a body kick. Cote stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Cote wants it to stay on the feet. Ruis fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Cote is out of range. Cote throws a series of strikes that have Ruis backpedaling.

Ruis fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Cote on the side of the head. Ruis scores to the head and body with a nice combination! Cote has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Cote there as he acknowledges the shot. Ruis fails with the takedown and Cote counters with a straight punch to the midsection. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Cote swats away the attempt to clinch by Ruis. Cote throws a front kick aimed at Ruis's knee but Ruis avoids it well.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ruis takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Cote throws a wild combination but nothing lands. Ruis misses with a low kick. Ruis closes the distance but Cote moves to the side and Cote counters with a nice kick to the body. Nice takedown defense from Cote. No joy for Ruis on that attempt. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Carlo Ruis. That's going to take a lot out of him. Ruis tries to clinch up. Cote throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Ruis stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly. Derek Cote seems to be getting the better of the standup. Ruis takes a swing at Cote's ribcage but misses. Cote takes a swing at Ruis's ribcage but misses. Ruis takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.

Cote is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Ruis rather than just go for the knockout. Cote stalks Ruis and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Ruis's face. Ruis staggers backwards, shaken.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Ruis darts in trying to clinch and Cote counters with an inside leg kick. Cote takes a swing at Ruis's ribcage but misses. Cote fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Ruis is looking to clinch. Ruis slips under a jab from Cote. Ruis shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Cote manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Cote has a closed guard, preventing Ruis from standing up. Ruis trying to control the position from guard on top but Cote is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Cote scrambles and gets back to his feet.

Ruis lands an overhand right. Cote throws a left and a right that both miss
and Ruis counters with a two punch combo. Cote throws a nice looking combination but Ruis bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. Cote slips under a jab. Cote lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Ruis backs up against the cage.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Cote misses with a low kick. Cote lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Ruis circles away quickly and effectively. Ruis tries to clinch up. Ruis shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Cote's guard. Ruis has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Cote is trying to control the position but Ruis postures up. Cote keeping full guard, as Ruis tries to pass. Ruis slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Cote pulls Ruis in to control the position. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Cote is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Carlo Ruis. I think Ruis has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
