Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, PJ Penn! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, William Bethea! The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Ian Loll and Dillan Fox.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Penn works the jab nicely. Penn rushes Bethea and presses him up against the cage. Penn breaks the clinch.
Bethea shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Bethea was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Penn tries to hold on but Bethea pushes him away. Penn tries to reverse the position but Bethea maintains control. The referee warns Penn that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Penn is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.
Penn wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back. Bethea is looking to control Penn but Penn is wriggling around and keeping busy. Bethea working for a choke but Penn is defending well. So, who will make the next big move? In this position it could be crucial.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Bethea misses with an elbow to the head. Bethea throwing sloppy strikes.
That's one minute gone in the round. Penn is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet. Penn tries to break free.
Bethea has Penn flattened out and is raining down punches. Bethea is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Penn wants to get back to his feet. Bethea has the hooks in. Penn is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted. Bethea is working the ground and pound. Can Penn escape? Bethea lands an elbow to the side of the head.
Penn is rocked! Watch the back of the head! Comes the shout from the referee towards Bethea.
Oh Penn is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!! Bethea has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Bethea throwing damaging strikes from the back! Penn could be in trouble here!
Bethea is working for the choke. It looks like he might have got it... has he...? Yes! Penn is tapping out! This one is all over!
