PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Karl Katze (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jack Barton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Karl Katze!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jack Barton!
The judges for this bout are John Roberts, Steve Montenegro and Bruno Lombardi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Katze fails with a takedown attempt.
Katze lands with a good body shot.
Katze slips under a jab.

Barton closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Katze trying to control but Barton postures up.

Katze kicks Barton off and gets back to his feet.
Katze lands a right hook to the body.
Katze ducks right into an uppercut from Barton.

Barton shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Barton showed some decent athleticism there.
Barton wants to take a breather but Katze is having none of it.
Katze wants to control but Barton is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Katze keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount.
Katze has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Barton is working away from the top position though.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Barton throws a predictable looking body shot
and Katze counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.

Katze is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Barton's half guard.
Barton tries to get to full guard but Katze has control of the leg.

Barton not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Katze is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Katze trying to control but Barton is working from the bottom.
Katze is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Katze will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Barton looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Katze puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

Barton wants to sweep here but Katze controlling him for the moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Barton manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Katze manages to get himself to full guard.

Katze is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Barton defends well.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Karl Katze will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Katze moves to take his opponent's back.
Barton turns into Katze and is now in his guard.

Barton is fighting to break Katze's control of his arms but Katze is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Barton wants to pass the guard but Katze is keeping the position.

Barton has gone for a leg lock! Katze slips out almost immediately though and dives into Barton's guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Barton working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Katze doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Katze manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Katze stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Barton swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Barton is trying to hold Katze in close to prevent damage but Katze has managed to pass into half guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Jack Barton will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Barton takes a swing at Katze's ribcage but misses.
Barton misses with a hook. Katze ducked under it nicely.
Katze swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Katze lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Barton circles away quickly and effectively.
Katze looks to land a right hand but Barton moved out of range.

Barton gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Katze got a little sloppy there for a moment and Barton has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Katze has managed to get both his arms back between Barton's legs - danger averted.
Katze is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Katze stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Barton swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Katze pushes down on Barton's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Katze moves nicely into side control.
Barton tries to contro but end up mounted... ooooh, that's bad.
Katze controlling the pace for now.
Katze looking to control but Barton is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Barton is controlling an arm, preventing Katze from taking his back. Although keeping him in mount is no better to be honest.

Katze swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Barton is now in Katze's guard. A big mistake from Katze there, giving up the dominant position!

Barton trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Katze manages to land a sweep and now he's on top!

The referee stands the fighters back up. Karl Katze just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
Katze moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
Barton avoids a lazy jab quite easily.

Barton fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Katze on the side of the head.
Katze keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Barton.

Barton shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Katze is trying to defend but Barton finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Katze is looking to improve his position.
Barton is trying to control the action in half guard but Katze is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Barton not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Katze wants to get back to full guard but Barton has passed into side control.

I would just about give that final round to Jack Barton.
I think Barton has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
