PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Roger Ribeiro (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Evander Kane (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Roger Ribeiro!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Evander Kane!
The judges for this bout are , Frank Antenori and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ribeiro shoots in for a takedown but Kane shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Ribeiro throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Kane's waist but Kane gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Ribeiro off to one side.
Ribeiro shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Kane as he jumps to the side.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Roger Ribeiro. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Ribeiro looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.


It looks like Roger Ribeiro has been cut.
Kane tries to close the distance and clinch but Ribeiro swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Kane tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Ribeiro shoots in but Kane avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Kane closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Kane lands in his opponent's guard.
Ribeiro is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Ribeiro is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Kane doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Ribeiro.

Kane is trying to stand up here but Ribeiro is controlling him well.

Ribeiro is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Ribeiro wants to take a breather but Kane is having none of it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kane has his hands clasped together around Ribeiro's back. He's all about the action.
Kane wants to control but Ribeiro is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Ribeiro stops Kane from getting back to his feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Ribeiro pivots, looking for a leg kick but Kane is out of range and Ribeiro settles back down.
Kane moves out of range as Ribeiro strikes.
Kane paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
Ribeiro ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Kane moves away.
Ribeiro looks for the body kick but Kane saw that one coming.

Kane changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Ribeiro looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Ribeiro is looking to regain half guard here but Kane keeps moving and retains side control.
Ribeiro is breathing heavily.
Kane wants to control but Ribeiro is keeping him busy.
Kane working away.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The referee asks Kane politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Kane prefers to stall for the moment though.
Kane looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Ribeiro is avoiding damage well.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Kane moves into range and clinches up with Ribeiro.

Kane has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Ribeiro regains guard immediately.
Ribeiro trying to keep a closed guard but Kane is proving a slippery customer.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Kane accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Kane wants to control from the top but Ribeiro keeps moving.

Ribeiro has his hands on Kane's head, controlling the position.
Ribeiro looking to hit a scissor sweep but Kane is one step ahead there.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Ribeiro is on top in guard.
Kane keeping moving, preventing Ribeiro from controlling successfully.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Evander Kane dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Roger Ribeiro's cut.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Kane has closed the distance and engaged Ribeiro in a clinch.
Ribeiro working hard to break the clinch.
Kane managing to block the knees to the body from Ribeiro.
Ribeiro throws a head punch that misses.
Ribeiro jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Kane walks away with a smile on his face. Ribeiro gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
A jab from Ribeiro misses.
Ribeiro will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Ribeiro tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Kane swivels and escapes.

Kane scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Ribeiro wants to improve his position but Kane is controlling well.
Ribeiro is staying active underneath Kane, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Kane controlling the action here.
Kane really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Ribeiro. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Ribeiro is looking to control Kane's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Ribeiro avoid being mounted?

Kane thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Kane in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Kane wants to get up but he can't break Ribeiro's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Kane looking to land some kicks to the body here.
Ribeiro misses with a takedown attempt - Kane sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Roger Ribeiro. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Kane gets a clinch.
Ribeiro jumps guard but Kane stands there with Ribeiro around his waist. Ribeiro gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Ribeiro tries to score a body lock takedown but Kane shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Ribeiro tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Kane lands a shoulder strike.

Kane has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Ribeiro uses from the top position.
Ribeiro is fighting to break Kane's control of his arms but Kane is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Ribeiro is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Kane is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Kane has escaped and now he's on top!

Ribeiro escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Kane gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Evander Kane showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Kane moves into range and connects with a jab.
Ribeiro throws a nice looking combination but Kane bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Kane throws a leg kick that misses.
Ribeiro shoots in but no luck this time.
Kane misses with a body kick.
Ribeiro throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Kane tries to clinch but Ribeiro is having none of it.
Kane pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Ribeiro thows a body shot but no joy.

and Kane counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Ribeiro!
Kane tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Kane seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Ribeiro does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Kane prevents Ribeiro from improving his position.
Kane is taking a breather. Ribeiro says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Kane not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Ribeiro wants to control the action here but instead Kane manages to pass to full mount!
Ribeiro avoids a series of strikes thrown by Kane.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Ribeiro is trying desperately to improve position.
Kane avoids the attempt from Ribeiro to control.
Kane controlling from the full mount.
Ribeiro is squirming around, avoiding Kane's attempts to control the action.
Ribeiro is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Ribeiro wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Kane.
Kane looking to control but Ribeiro is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Kane is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Evander Kane has got the better of the ground game so far.
Kane prevents Ribeiro from getting the reversal.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Kane controlling the position easily from mount.
Roger Ribeiro has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Ribeiro is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Ribeiro is looking to improve his position but Kane isn't that keen on the idea.

Evander Kane comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Kane has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
