PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between dave mastiff (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Fred Burton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Burton has chosen Carcass - Keep on Rotting in the Free World as his entrance music. Fred Burton is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, dave mastiff!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Fred Burton!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Bishop, Sam Margolis and Richard Clark.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

mastiff shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Burton has one foot on mastiff's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
Burton throws out a loose jab but mastiff uses good head movement to avoid it.
Burton thows a body shot but no joy.
Burton ducks down and throws a hook to the body but mastiff moves away.
mastiff will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
The fighters circling - Burton throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
mastiff scores with a hook to the body. Burton takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Burton throws a right and a left that mastiff avoids nicely.
mastiff throws a front kick that sends Burton stumbling back into the cage.
Burton looks gassed!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Burton throws a right hand that mastiff ducks under and follows up with a left that mastiff also avoids with ease.
mastiff keeps the fight on the outside.
mastiff tries to close the distance and clinch up but Burton swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Burton throws out a loose jab but mastiff uses good head movement to avoid it.
Burton displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from mastiff.

mastiff with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
mastiff shoots in but no luck this time.
A looping hook to the body misses from Burton. mastiff does a little dance to reset his feet.
Burton scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Fred Burton seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Burton doesn't manage to clinch there - mastiff circles away.
mastiff closes the distance and clinches up with Burton, looking for a takedown. mastiff pushes Burton against the cage but Burton circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for dave mastiff. That's going to take a lot out of him.
mastiff plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!

Burton wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
mastiff fails to pull guard.
Burton lands a nice looking hook to the body, against the cage.
Burton has mastiff pushed against the cage.

mastiff pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Horrible takedown by mastiff or perhaps it was just good defense by Burton which made him look bad.

Burton closes the distance and clinches.
Burton prevents the takedown attempt.

Burton breaks the clinch.

Burton clinches with his opponent.

mastiff escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
mastiff tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
mastiff is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
mastiff misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Burton misses with a few strikes there.
Burton throws a series of punches but mastiff avoids them all with ease.
Burton is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by mastiff.

and mastiff counters with a nice low kick that buckles Burton's knee momentarily.

Burton swings and misses with a hook to the body.
mastiff throws a left and a right that both miss

and Burton counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Burton.
mastiff wants to sweep here but Burton controlling him for the moment.
mastiff wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Burton is now in half guard.
Burton looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.

Burton wants to pass the guard but mastiff is defending well.
Burton is trying to control the action in half guard but mastiff is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Burton is looking to advance position but mastiff won't allow it.
Burton is taking a breather. mastiff says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Burton is looking to pass mastiff's guard but actually mastiff recovers to full guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that dave mastiff will probably get the nod.
That's time! mastiff's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

dave mastiff is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Burton shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches mastiff napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Burton is looking to take a break and control but mastiff is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Burton decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Burton wants to clinch.
Burton loads up on a big right hand but mastiff slips the punch.

A short body shot lands from Burton as the two fighters clinch.

Burton is really struggling to land any decent head shots against his taller opponent.

Burton breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
mastiff takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Burton connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between mastiff's hands.

Burton drops mastiff with a beautiful combination! mastiff stares up at his opponent, who ushers him back to his feet - Burton is looking for the KO!

Burton misses with a combination

and mastiff counters by moving into the clinch.
mastiff is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.

Burton has mastiff pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Burton pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending mastiff tumbling to the mat - Burton dives into mastiff's guard.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Burton can do anything to dispel that myth.

mastiff is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Burton defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
mastiff is hanging on to Burton's back as he tries to escape.
mastiff lands with a big left hand that may well have hurt his opponent. Can Burton hold on?!
mastiff tries to get the hooks in deep but Burton pushed the leg off.
mastiff has the hooks in. Burton is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.

Burton decides to stand up, so the ref orders mastiff to his feet.

mastiff walks into a stiff left hand from Burton.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

It's got to the stage where if one of these guys blows hard enough, the other might fall over.

Burton throws and elbow that misses. mastiff uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Burton's guard. Nice move by mastiff!

mastiff wants to lay and pray for a moment but Burton keeps working.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
No luck with that takedown attempt from mastiff.
mastiff throws a leg kick but Burton moved away.

A big right followed by a crushing left from Burton knocks mastiff out cold! Ouch - that one's going to be featured in highlight reels for years to come!
