PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Marcelo Rua (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Junko Zaki (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Junko Zaki will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Marcelo Rua!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Junko Zaki!
The judges for this bout are George Francis, Chris Downing and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rua closes this distance looking for a takedown but Zaki circles away.
Zaki doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Rua counters with a takedown into side control.
You can see the frustration on Zaki's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Zaki is looking to regain half guard here but Rua keeps moving and retains side control.
Zaki pushes Rua away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Rua gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Zaki is not in a great position here, taking some shots.
Zaki is pushing Rua's head away, looking to escape. Rua manages to hold on to the position though.
Zaki tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Rua wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Rua looks up at the clock and then as Zaki takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Rua smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!

Zaki is pushing Rua's head away, looking to escape. Rua manages to hold on to the position though.

Zaki wants to get back to his feet.
Zaki is trying to control Rua's posture but Rua avoids it.
Zaki is looking for a sweep.
Zaki takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
Rua lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Zaki down.

Zaki tries to buck Rua off but Rua is having none of it.

Rua working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.

Zaki takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Rua lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Zaki down.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Zaki looks gassed!
Zaki wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
Rua wants to lay and pray for a moment but Zaki keeps working.
Rua moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.

Rua fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Rua controlling the position.
Zaki wants to control but Rua postures up.
Zaki tries to improve position but can't.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Rua is defended easily by Zaki.
Zaki looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Rua is fending him off so far but Zaki persists. Nope, Rua circles away and we're back to standing.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Zaki gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Zaki has his feet on Rua's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.

Zaki wants to stand and escape but Rua is having none of it.

Zaki is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
Zaki is breathing heavily.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Rua's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Rua has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Zaki is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Rua is controlling him.
Rua connects with a couple of short punches.

Marcelo Rua overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Rua seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Rua accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Zaki is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Rua is controlling him.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Zaki is on top in guard.
Zaki not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Rua on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Rua tries to get out of the position.
Zaki thows a big elbow that misses.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Zaki decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Rua takes a kick to the side of the head.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Rua.
Zaki tries to close the distance and clinch up but Rua swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Zaki is looking to clinch but Rua is avoiding it.

Zaki doesn't manage to clinch there - Rua circles away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Marcelo Rua will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Rua shoots in for a takedown but Zaki shows good takedown defense.

Zaki rushes Rua and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Zaki is leaning against Rua and scores with a nice uppercut to the body.

Zaki's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Marcelo Rua seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Rua.

Zaki ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Zaki no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Rua postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Zaki lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Rua!

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Zaki tries to clinch there but Rua circles away.
Zaki tries to close the distance and clinch up but Rua swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Zaki on the wrong end of some ground and pound.
Rua cracks Zaki with a big right hand but Zaki just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Rua is looking to take a break and control but Zaki is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Zaki is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Rua has just dragged him back down to the mat.
Junko Zaki has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Rua lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Marcelo Rua.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Rua, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
