Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Dave Davis! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Derek Clingan! The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Jack Bonds and Frank Antenori.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A telegraphed takedown attempt from Clingan is defended easily by Davis. Clingan closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Davis did well to prevent Clingan getting side control. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Davis manages to get to full guard.
Clingan wants to control from the top but Davis keeps moving. Davis looking for a guillotine here but Clingan defends easily.
Davis keeping full guard, as Clingan tries to pass. Clingan chips away with some ground and pound. Clingan must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
That's one minute gone in the round. Davis keeping moving, preventing Clingan from controlling successfully. Clingan stands and steps away. Davis gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game. Clingan moves into the clinch. Clingan softening up his opponent with strikes, against the cage. Clingan has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Davis uses from the top position. Clingan looking for a guillotine here but Davis defends easily.
Clingan is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Davis is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Davis is breathing heavily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Clingan lands a decent punch to the body there. Clingan has Davis pulled in close to control his posture. Clingan controls Davis momentarily but Davis frees himself. Davis thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Clingan gets the takedown into side control. Clingan stands up and we're back to a striking position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Clingan drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Clingan is trying to get an arm triangle but Davis is defending well. Davis is not content to let Clingan control the position. Davis is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here. Clingan tries to move into full mount but can't pass Davis's legs. Clingan remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while. Davis sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard. Clingan is trying to control. Davis wants to improve his position but can't escape this time. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Derek Clingan dominated that round. Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!
Clingan shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Clingan was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Davis sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though. Clingan controlling the action here. Clingan stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Davis to get to his feet. Davis fails with the takedown and Clingan counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. Clingan tries to stand and escape but Davis is controlling the position. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Davis tries to get to full guard but Clingan has control of the leg. Clingan moves into full mount! Davis won't be happy about that!
That's one minute gone in the round. Clingan can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Davis is looking to escape. Davis is wriggling around trying to escape.
Clingan swings around for an armbar and he's got it! Wow, that came out of nowhere! What a finish!
