PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Ted Chips (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shin Katama (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Katama comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Inject the Venom kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Ted Chips!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Shin Katama!
The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Felipe Paraventi and Thiago Cunha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Katama stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Katama wants it to stay on the feet.
Chips shoots for a takedown but Katama saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Chips shoots in but Katama avoids the takedown attempt easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ted Chips. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Chips throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Katama swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Katama tries to land a leg kick but Chips saw it coming and moves away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Chips shoots in looking for a takedown. Katama tries to sprawl out of it but Chips keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Katama manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
A head kick misses from Katama.
Shin Katama is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Katama slaps away a takedown attempt from Chips, before circling back to the center of the mat.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Chips.
Chips shoots in but no luck this time.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Chips.
Katama misses with a series of wild punches.
Katama misses with a double jab.
Ted Chips seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Chips darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Chips is looking to advance position but Katama won't allow it.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Katama can do anything to dispel that myth.

Chips thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Katama really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Chips. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Katama kicks Chips off and gets back to his feet.

Katama throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Chips.
Katama throws a right hand that Chips ducks under and follows up with a left that Chips also avoids with ease.

Katama displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Chips.
Chips fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Chips misses with a wild body shot.
Katama fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Chips on the side of the head.
Katama misses with an attempted mid kick.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
A clash of legs there as Chips blocks the low kick.
A shot to de liver by Katama. Beautiful body shot.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Chips changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Katama looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Chips prevents Katama from escaping the position.

Chips thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Chips is putting a hurting on Katama here, landing some big shots from side control.
Katama wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
Chips fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Katama pushes Chips away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Chips gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Chips has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Chips avoids the head kick by Katama.
Chips swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Katama counters with a big head kick but Chips shrugs it off.
Chips doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Katama counters with a low kick, right behind Chips 's knee.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Chips misses with a wild body shot.
Chips takes a swing at Katama's ribcage but misses.
Katama does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Chips looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Chips sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.
Shin Katama is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Chips blocks a head kick by Katama.

Katama throws a low kick but Chips avoids it.
Chips steps to his left, right into the path of a big body kick from Katama. That one must have hurt.
Katama throws a left and a right that both miss

and Chips counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Chips prevents Katama from getting back to his feet.
Chips trying to control the position from guard on top but Katama is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Katama wants to stand up but Chips is controlling him.

Chips thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Katama is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.

Katama gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Chips.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ted Chips. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Chips tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Chips has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Katama clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
Katama wants to get back to his feet.

Ted Chips dominated that second round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

and Chips counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Chips drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Chips jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Katama wants to get back to his feet but Chips is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Hammerfist, elbow! yells Chips's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Katama is looking to stand up but Chips isn't so interested in that idea.
Chips content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Chips with a nice head shot there.
Chips wants to control from the top but Katama keeps moving.

Chips postures up in Katama's guard and throws a big left but Katama blocks it.

Chips seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Chips accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Chips controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Chips scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Katama is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Chips is controlling him.
Chips stands up over Katama, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Katama takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Chips trying to control but Katama is working from the bottom.
Katama preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Chips not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Ted Chips just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
Katama throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.

And that's the end of the fight!
Ted Chips showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Chips has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
