PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jose Comboio (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Xavier Stevens (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jose Comboio!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Xavier Stevens!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Gregory Folan and Dillan Fox.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Stevens scores a takedown into full mount!
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Stevens cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

Stevens is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Comboio has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Stevens controlling the pace for now.
Comboio keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Comboio manages to regain half guard whilst avoiding the strikes.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Stevens wants to lay and pray for a moment but Comboio keeps working.
Stevens has decided to stand back up but his arm is trapped. Whilst he's worrying about his arm, Comboio works to full guard.
Comboio utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Stevens wants to stand but Comboio has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Stevens drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Comboio manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Stevens has Comboio in his guard.
Stevens looks gassed!

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Comboio controlling from the top position.
Stevens preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Stevens not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Stevens can't keep his opponent in guard - Comboio advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Comboio wants to pass to mount but Stevens is defending the position.
Comboio with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Stevens won't allow Comboio to pass to mount.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Stevens wants to improve his position but Comboio is controlling well.
Comboio seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Comboio has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Comboio wants to pass to mount but Stevens is defending the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Xavier Stevens will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Stevens shoots in for a takedown but Comboio shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Comboio shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Stevens throws a right and a left that Comboio avoids nicely.
Comboio fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Stevens avoids it really well and circles away.
Comboio fails with a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jose Comboio. That's going to take a lot out of him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Comboio fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Stevens, pushing him back against the cage.

Stevens manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Stevens is breathing heavily.
Comboio is stalling in the full guard.

Comboio slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Comboio works to advance to full mount. Stevens defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.
Comboio looking to control and managing it successfully.
Comboio looking to finish Stevens with some ground and pound. This is bad for Stevens!

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Comboio sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.

Comboio trying to control but he's not successful this time.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Stevens is trying desperately to improve position.
Stevens tries to hold on but Comboio postures up.
Comboio is landing with some decent strikes but Stevens is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jose Comboio dominated that second round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!



Comboio is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Stevens's half guard.
Stevens is trying to stand back up but Comboio is controlling him
Comboio wants to lay and pray for a moment but Stevens keeps working.
Stevens has hold of Comboio's hands but Comboio slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Stevens works his way to full guard. Good work.
Stevens takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Stevens is looking for a triangle but Comboio pushes his legs off easily.
Comboio sitting in guard here, content to control.
Comboio trying to control the position from guard on top but Stevens is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Jose Comboio just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.

Comboio is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Stevens's half guard.
Stevens is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Comboio controlling the pace.
Stevens is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Stevens is staying active underneath Comboio, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Stevens keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Comboio passes to side control.
Comboio trying to control the position but Stevens is working away.
Comboio controls the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Stevens wants to control but Comboio postures up.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Comboio happy to just control the position for now.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jose Comboio showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Comboio has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
