PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Vernon Reed (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and BAKI HUGHES (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Reed comes to the cage accompanied by Tiger style. Reed has a slight injury, which hopefully won't affect the fight too much. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, BAKI HUGHES!
The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Ren Mimura and Sosuke Kotani.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
HUGHES shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Reed defends it nicely.
HUGHES shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Nice sprawl there from Reed as HUGHES shoots in.
Vernon Reed has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of BAKI HUGHES.
HUGHES shoots in looking for a takedown. Reed tries to sprawl out of it but HUGHES keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Reed manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Reed could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Reed lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.

Reed leaves HUGHES with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

HUGHES throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Reed was covering up waiting for the punch and HUGHES finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Reed is controlling HUGHES's posture.

Reed is looking to stand up but HUGHES isn't so interested in that idea.
HUGHES stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Reed swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Reed knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for HUGHES on the ground.

Reed lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for HUGHES!
Reed wants to control the pace but HUGHES is squirming around nicely.
Reed prevents HUGHES from getting the reversal.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
HUGHES tries to hold on but Reed pushes him away.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Reed wants to control the pace but HUGHES is squirming around nicely.
HUGHES keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Reed is working an open guard so HUGHES takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Reed has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Reed wants to stand but HUGHES is controlling his posture from full guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Reed looking to sit in guard and control but HUGHES gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

BAKI HUGHES showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

HUGHES changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Reed tries to avoid it but HUGHES manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Reed to the ground. Reed escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

HUGHES fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Reed, pushing him back against the cage.
Reed looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
HUGHES fails to pull guard.

HUGHES drops down looking for an ankle pick but Reed pulls his leg out and moves away.
Reed lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but HUGHES circles away quickly and effectively.
Reed misses with a jab, cross combination.
HUGHES shoots in for a takedown but Reed shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

HUGHES dives in and grabs Reed's left leg, looking for a takedown. Reed pushes down on HUGHES's head and hops out.
HUGHES shoots in for a takedown but Reed shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Reed throws a series of strikes that have HUGHES backpedaling.
Horrible takedown by HUGHES or perhaps it was just good defense by Reed which made him look bad.

BAKI HUGHES seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

HUGHES shoots in and drives through. Reed sprawls well.
Reed throws a right and a left that both miss.
Reed throws a one two combo.
HUGHES shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Reed but Reed pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Reed swats away the attempt to clinch by HUGHES.
Reed circles away from the clinch attempt.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Reed fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
HUGHES tries to clinch up.
