Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Ricardo Costa! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Timmy Varas! The judges for this bout are Albert Achterberg, Saam Ante and Radbod Blank.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Varas closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Costa did well to prevent Varas getting side control. Varas stalling. Costa is staying active underneath Varas, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Varas thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Costa's head. Varas seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. I looks like Varas might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
That's one minute gone in the round. Costa won't allow Varas to pass to mount. Varas is looking to take a break and control but Costa is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Varas stalling away here and it's allowed Costa to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard. Costa is breathing heavily. Varas seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Timmy Varas. Varas drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
That's two minutes gone in the round. You can see the frustration on Costa's face as Varas controls the position. Costa is trying to get back to half guard. The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Varas darts in and clinches Costa up against the cage. Costa is trying to force a seperation but Varas has the dominant position. Costa gets through Varas's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Varas goes for a takedown in the clinch but Costa prevents it.

Costa is looking to break free of the clinch but Varas has double underhooks. Varas drops down looking for an ankle pick but Costa pulls his leg out and moves away.
Ricardo Costa has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Timmy Varas. Varas fails with a takedown attempt. Costa misses with a hook. Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Costa misses with a takedown attempt and Varas counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground. Costa is trying to control the position but Varas postures up. Costa is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control. Costa not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

A close second round but Timmy Varas will probably get the nod - 10:9. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

Costa utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Costa is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Varas is controlling him. Costa has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Varas can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Varas controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Costa with a flurry of punches that miss.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Costa looks to land a combination but Varas avoids it well. No luck with that takedown attempt from Varas. A combination from Costa does no damage. Timmy Varas is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Costa fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Varas looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath. Varas wants to clinch. Varas shoots in but no luck this time.

Varas takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Varas. Costa bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Varas's head backwards. Nice sprawl there from Costa as Varas shoots in. Varas takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it. Varas misses with a takedown attempt letting Costa counter with a right hand. Varas shoots for a double leg takedown but Costa sprawls well. He's pushed Varas's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Varas misses with a two punch combination.

Varas must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Varas trying to control but Costa is working from the bottom. Ricardo Costa has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Varas stays in close to Costa's body and controls the position. Timmy Varas is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Costa keeping moving, preventing Varas from controlling successfully.
