The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Johnson shoots for a takedown but Maia saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Johnson fails with a takedown attempt.
Maia misses with a two punch combination.

Maia closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Maia thows a huge punch but Johnson dodges it nicely.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Maia passes to full mount!

Maia has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Maia is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Johnson sees it coming and defends easily.
Maia is looking to pass Johnson's guard but actually Johnson recovers to full guard.
Johnson wants to sweep but no luck.
Maia is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Maia stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Johnson swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Johnson manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Maia manages to get himself to full guard.

Maia is working for submissions here. He's thrown up his legs looking for a tringle but Johnson frees his head nicely. Oh but Maia has switched to an armbar! Johnson is tapping furiously! Lovely submission there!
