PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Steven De Sousa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bartosz Kotowiec (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Bartosz Kotowiec struggled to make weight for this fight. He only made it down to 171.6lbs at the first attempt and had to take the additional two hours to make the official bout weight. Let's see how much it's taken out of him. Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Steven De Sousa!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Bartosz Kotowiec!
The judges for this bout are Dean Styles, John Kavanagh and John Roberts.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
De Sousa tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Kotowiec swivels and escapes.
De Sousa throws a right and a left that Kotowiec avoids nicely.
Kotowiec keeps the fight on the outside.

Kotowiec throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. De Sousa was covering up waiting for the punch and Kotowiec finishes the takedown easily into guard.

De Sousa looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Kotowiec works a leg free and moves into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kotowiec moves into full mount! De Sousa won't be happy about that!

Kotowiec looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
De Sousa is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Kotowiec is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but De Sousa is surviving well by controlling Kotowiec's body position as best he can.

Kotowiec is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. De Sousa can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Kotowiec jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… De Sousa is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by De Sousa and Kotowiec has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Kotowiec tries to free his leg and advance position but De Sousa is retaining full guard.

De Sousa controls Kotowiec momentarily but Kotowiec frees himself.
Kotowiec stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. De Sousa swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Kotowiec is pushing down on De Sousa's leg trying to pass to half guard. De Sousa is fighting to maintain full guard but Kotowiec has managed to sneak the leg through.

Kotowiec uses his free foot to push down on De Sousa's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for De Sousa.

Kotowiec has hold of De Sousa's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and De Sousa manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
De Sousa is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
De Sousa tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Kotowiec with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.

Kotowiec is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
De Sousa gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.

De Sousa misses with a takedown attempt

and Kotowiec counters with a single leg into guard. De Sousa didn't expect that.

Kotowiec avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Kotowiec thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Kotowiec wants to pass the guard but De Sousa is keeping the position.
De Sousa controls Kotowiec momentarily but Kotowiec frees himself.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Kotowiec drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and De Sousa dives on top into guard.

De Sousa stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kotowiec swivels though and keeps the full guard.
De Sousa wants to control from the top but Kotowiec keeps moving.

Kotowiec is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. De Sousa is aware though and is defending well.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Kotowiec keeping moving, preventing De Sousa from controlling successfully.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Kotowiec clinches but De Sousa breaks the clinch
and De Sousa finishes the little exchange by landing a big kick to the body.

A big left from De Sousa misses.
Kotowiec fails with the takedown

and De Sousa moves into the clinch.
De Sousa tries to circle away but Kotowiec has him pinned against the cage.
De Sousa looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
De Sousa jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Kotowiec walks away with a smile on his face. De Sousa gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Steven De Sousa is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

and Kotowiec decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in De Sousa's guard.

De Sousa doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Kotowiec counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

De Sousa knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Kotowiec on the ground.

Kotowiec is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Kotowiec tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Kotowiec's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Kotowiec trying to control but he's not successful this time.
