PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Kevin Hughes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ferdinan Sanchez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Kevin Hughes! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ferdinan Sanchez! The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Elvis Blanc and Alec Ball.
 The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sanchez shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Hughes's guard. Sanchez wants to control from the top but Hughes keeps moving.
Hughes escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Sanchez gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Hughes is pulling down on Sanchez's head to control his posture. Hammerfist, elbow! yells Sanchez's corner. There ya go! There ya go! Sanchez working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Sanchez wants to control from the top but Hughes keeps moving. Hughes looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it. Sanchez stopping the sweep attempt from Hughes.
 That's one minute gone in the round. Sanchez postures up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Sanchez thows a big elbow that misses. Hughes manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Sanchez manages to get himself to full guard.
Sanchez keeping moving, preventing Hughes from controlling successfully. Hughes will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Hughes accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Sanchez not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Hughes drops back looking for a leg! Sanchez is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Sanchez manages to kick Hughes off! Hughes jumps back into Sanchez's guard. Sanchez is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
 That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Hughes tries to free his leg and advance position but Sanchez is retaining full guard. Hughes looking to sit in guard and control but Sanchez gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Hughes working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Sanchez doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Sanchez manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Hughes is breathing heavily. Sanchez wants to control from the top but Hughes keeps moving. Hughes trying to keep a closed guard but Sanchez is proving a slippery customer.
Sanchez looking to sit in guard and control but Hughes gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
 That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hughes drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Hughes jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Hughes trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Hughes wants to control from the top but Sanchez keeps moving. Sanchez working a defensive guard here.
 The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Sanchez drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Hughes really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Sanchez wants to take a breather but Hughes manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for Sanchez.
 That's four minutes gone in the round. Hughes can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Sanchez controls the pace. Sanchez working some strikes from top position. Sanchez slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Hughes is looking to sinch up a triangle. Sanchez throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Hughes's body to avoid the submission. Hughes has instead reached around Sanchez's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Hughes arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:45 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Kevin Hughes!
