PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Erick Villar (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Carson Cools (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Carson Cools is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Erick Villar!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Carson Cools!
The judges for this bout are , and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cools tries to clinch up but Villar circles away and keeps his distance.

Villar throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Cools was covering up waiting for the punch and Villar finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Villar is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Villar prevents Cools from getting back to his feet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Cools wants to sweep but no luck.
Cools throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
Villar forces his way into half guard.
Cools has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Villar is working away from the top position though.
Villar is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

Villar stands up from half guard.
Villar is looking to clinch.
Villar shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Cools as he avoids it easily.

and Villar decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Cools's guard.
Villar is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Cools controls Villar momentarily but Villar frees himself.

Cools looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Cools looks gassed!

Villar seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Villar seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Cools for as long as he can get away with.
Villar has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Cools wants to control the position but Villar says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.

Well, if Villar is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Cools misses with a takedown

and Villar counters with a nice double leg into side control. Cools won't be happy with that.
Cools is letting Villar control him for a moment.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Erick Villar just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
Cools throws a shot to the body.
Cools tries to clinch but Villar is having none of it.
Villar throws a looping overhand right but Cools ducks down to avoid it.
Villar misses with a body punch

and Cools counters with a nice double leg into side control. Villar won't be happy with that.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Villar is looking for a sweep.

Villar tries to escape but Cools is in control.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Villar is trying to get back to half guard.
Villar struggling a bit here.
Cools wants to control but Villar is keeping him busy.
Cools working away.
Cools tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Cools closes the distance and clinches.
Cools lands a nice knee to the body.
Cools tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Villar just stands there and leans against the cage.
Cools prevents a takedown attempt there.

Cools jumps into guard, dragging Villar to the mat.
Villar passes into half guard under a barage of strikes.
Villar controlling the pace.
Cools trying to control here.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Cools wants to improve his position but Villar is controlling well.
Villar passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Cools!
Villar sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Cools tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Villar looking to secure an arm triangle but Cools defends it well.
Cools tries to hold on but Villar postures up.
Villar takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Cools is looking to get to half guard.
Villar controlling the position easily from mount.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Erick Villar will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Cools cracks Villar with a right hand to the side of the head.
Cools cracks a nice hook into Villar's ribs.
Villar tries for a takedown but Cools circles away easily

and Cools holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Cools breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Cools slaps away a takedown attempt from Villar, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Villar shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Erick Villar. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Cools rushes Villar and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Cools breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Cools shoots and misses

so Villar counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Cools is looking for a triangle but Villar pushes his legs off easily.

Cools looking for subs off his back but Villar has passed one foot through into half guard.
Erick Villar overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Cools trying to control but Villar postures up.
Villar is controlling the pace.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Villar decides to stand up.
Villar tries to clinch up
and Cools counters with a nice leg kick.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Cools manages to break the clinch.
Villar swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Cools counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Villar drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Cools stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.

Cools wants the takedown. Villar is fighting it off but Cools persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Villar's guard against the cage.

Villar escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Cools gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Cools missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Cools wants to control from the top but Villar keeps moving.
Cools must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Villar has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Cools can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Villar is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Erick Villar.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Villar, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
