Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the light heavyweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jordan Jones! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mikey Davis! The judges for this bout are Jonathan Paton, Reed Andrews and Eddie Farnsworth.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Jones wants to clinch up but Davis keeps it at a distance. Davis misses with a wild body shot. Davis looks to land a right hand but Jones moved out of range. Jones shoots in for a takedown but Davis shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Davis ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent. Jones scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Jones trying to control the position but Davis is working away. Jones wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Davis, who protects the arm well. Jones looking to control but instead Davis has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard. Davis is refusing to be controlled, as Jones sits in half guard. Davis is looking for a sweep. Jones is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Jones wants to free his trapped foot but Davis is holding on for dear life with his legs. Jones seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Davis does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Jones lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt. Jones prevents Davis from improving his position. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Davis can do anything to dispel that myth. Jones is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Davis really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Jones. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Jones is keen to just control but Davis is a slippery customer.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Jones avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Jones shoots in but no luck this time. Davis misses with a wild body shot. Davis throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Jones throws a front kick aimed at Davis's knee but Davis avoids it well. Mikey Davis is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Davis scores with a body shot.
Davis looks to land a left hand but Jones moved out of range nicely. Davis misses with a few strikes there.
Jones tries to close the distance and clinch but Davis swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Jones changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Davis tries to avoid it but Jones manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Davis to the ground. Davis escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jordan Jones. That's going to take a lot out of him. Davis scores with a nice strike. Davis connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe. Davis misses with a wild body shot.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Jones tries to clinch but Davis is having none of it. Davis stuffs the takedown attempt from Jones. Jones gets slowly back to his feet. Jones uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Davis. Davis takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Davis stuffs the takedown attempt from Jones. Jones gets slowly back to his feet. Jones staying out of range there. Jones takes one to the chin there. Jones misses with a looping left. Davis throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Davis throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Jones showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Davis.
Jones tries to clinch up but Davis circles away and keeps his distance. Davis drops Jones with a left and a right! Oh, Jones is hurt - Davis dives into side control looking to finish!
Jones is rocked!
It looks like Jordan Jones has been cut. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Davis lands a strong strike to the head of Jones. That's dazed him! Davis looking to finish here. Jones is waving his arms around trying to block but he's hurt badly - Davis lands more strikes and the referee steps in to end the fight!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:41 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Mikey Davis! Mikey Davis is the new light heavyweight champion!
