PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Ren Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rich Brown (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gracie comes into the arena with Summer Madness (Extended Version) Remix blaring out of the sound system. The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ren Gracie!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 6 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Rich Brown!
The judges for this bout are Sergei Dronov, Vladimir Khabensky and Viktor Lagutenko.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gracie is looking to clinch.

Brown shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Gracie can't escape the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Brown misses with a head shot.
Brown thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.
Gracie is looking to get to half guard.

Brown throwing sloppy strikes, which aren't doing any damage.
Gracie tries to lock up and control but Brown gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Brown working some short elbows here. He postures up to throw some more ground and pound but Gracie slips a leg through to get back to half guard. Nice work.

Brown wants to free his trapped foot but Gracie is holding on for dear life with his legs.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Brown is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Gracie is just riding it out for now. Brown eventually gives up the hold.

Brown lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Brown is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Gracie doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Brown.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Gracie chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Brown can pounce on him.

and Brown counters with a nice double leg into side control. Gracie won't be happy with that.

Brown wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Gracie, who protects the arm well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Brown creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Gracie sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Gracie parries the strikes from Brown easily there. Brown is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Gracie to escape.

Brown swings around for an armbar but Gracie sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Brown's guard.

Brown has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Brown is staying active underneath Gracie, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Gracie is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Brown is pressing down on Gracie's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Brown has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Gracie can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Gracie controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Brown is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Brown has a closed guard, preventing Gracie from standing up.

Gracie got a little sloppy there for a moment and Brown has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Gracie has managed to get both his arms back between Brown's legs - danger averted.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Brown throws his legs up looking for a submission but Gracie uses it to pass to side control.
Brown is looking to reverse the position.
Gracie has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Brown!

Gracie has control of Brown's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Brown regains control of the situation pretty easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rich Brown showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Brown throws and elbow that misses. Gracie uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Brown's guard. Nice move by Gracie!

Brown working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Gracie doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Gracie manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Gracie wants to get up but he can't break Brown's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Brown accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Rich Brown is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Let's hope that Brown has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Rich Brown comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Brown has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
