Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Doug Flutie! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jacob McGill! The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, Damien Edna and Bruno Hogan.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! McGill has taken the fight to the clinch.
McGill pulls guard. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Flutie throwing strikes but missing. McGill tries to land a sweep but no joy. McGill looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Flutie preventing the sweep. Flutie throws a strike but McGill rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. McGill drops back looking for a leg! Flutie is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Flutie manages to kick McGill off! McGill jumps back into Flutie's guard. Flutie keeping full guard, as McGill tries to pass. McGill postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Flutie is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of McGill, into his guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Flutie postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Flutie looking to pass the guard. Flutie with a flurry of punches that miss. McGill looking to hit a scissor sweep but Flutie is one step ahead there. Flutie stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. McGill swivels though and keeps the full guard. Flutie looking to sit in guard and control but McGill gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. McGill looking to pass the guard.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. McGill wants to clinch. McGill tries to close the distance and clinch but Flutie swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. McGill shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. McGill working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. McGill won't allow Flutie to sweep him here. McGill stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Flutie swivels though and keeps the full guard. Flutie looking for a sweep. Not yet Flutie, not yet. McGill prevents Flutie from getting back to his feet. McGill postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Flutie is trying to control the position but McGill postures up. Flutie avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Flutie looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. McGill wants to control but Flutie is keeping busy and won't allow it. Flutie thows a huge punch but McGill dodges it nicely.
Flutie looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks McGill with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. McGill is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Flutie pulls his head out easily. Still in half guard, Flutie seems content to control. Flutie passes to side control. McGill is trying to improve his position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. McGill is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. The ground and pound from Flutie seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent. McGill manages to work his way to half guard, despite Flutie's best efforts. Flutie seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but McGill does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. McGill moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. McGill tries to land a sweep but no joy. McGill is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Flutie has his hands clasped together but McGill extends an breaks Flutie's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by McGill.
