The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, William Peck and Dillan Fox.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sherls shoots in and bounces Phillips off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Phillips working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Sherls.
Phillips can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Sherls controls the pace.

Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Sherls.

and Sherls counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Phillips's guard now.
Sherls controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

The referee asks Sherls politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Sherls prefers to stall for the moment though.
Sherls has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Phillips is trying to escape and get back to his feet.
Phillips sneaks back into half guard.
Phillips tries to kick Sherls off but Sherls keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
