PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Charlie Liddell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ryan Bader (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Bader has chosen "Darth Bader" as his entrance music. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 1, fighting out of New York, Charlie Liddell!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 1, fighting out of New York, Ryan Bader!
The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Eddie Farnsworth and Anthony Taglia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bader lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!


It looks like Charlie Liddell has been cut.

Bader decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Bader is keen to just control but Liddell is a slippery customer.
Liddell is looking to improve his position.
Bader not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Bader sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Liddell defending well though.
Bader trying to control from half guard but Liddell is working away.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Liddell blocking the ground and pound attempt from Bader.

Liddell knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Bader on the ground.
Bader thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Liddell on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Liddell tries to get out of the position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Liddell misses with a combination

and Bader counters with a takedown into side control.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Bader looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Liddell parries the strikes from Bader easily there. Bader is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Liddell to escape.
Bader is looking to take a break and control but Liddell is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Bader is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Liddell has escaped the position, nice work there.
Liddell is pushing Bader's head away, looking to escape. Bader manages to hold on to the position though.

Bader is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Liddell knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Liddell is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Liddell can't do much from the bottom here.
Bader lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Bader connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Liddell some visible discomfort.

Bader goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Liddell rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Bader's guard! Nice work there by Liddell!
Liddell thows a big elbow that misses.
Bader not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Bader has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Liddell can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Liddell has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Liddell controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Liddell postures up.
Liddell looking to sit in guard and control but Bader gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Bader drops back looking for a leg! Liddell is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Liddell manages to kick Bader off! Bader jumps back into Liddell's guard.
Liddell not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Bader throwing strikes but missing.
Bader with a flurry of punches that miss.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Bader thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Bader shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Bader is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Bader shoots for a double leg takedown but Liddell sprawls well. He's pushed Bader's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Bader looks gassed!
Bader looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Liddell slaps away a takedown attempt from Bader, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Charlie Liddell has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ryan Bader.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Bader is looking to clinch but Liddell is avoiding it.
Bader looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Liddell is fending him off so far but Bader persists. Nope, Liddell circles away and we're back to standing.
Bader wants to clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ryan Bader dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Charlie Liddell's cut.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Liddell avoids the head kick by Bader.
Bader tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Liddell swivels and escapes.
Liddell dodges the punch combination from Bader.
Bader avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Liddell tries a head kick but it misses.
Liddell throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
letting Bader counter with a right hand.
Bader takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Ryan Bader seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Bader shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Bader is breathing heavily.
Bader missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Bader has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Liddell is defending against the submission attempts here by Bader.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Liddell tries to kick Bader off but Bader keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Liddell tries to get to full guard but Bader has control of the leg.

Liddell keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

Bader is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Liddell defends it well.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Bader closes this distance looking for a takedown but Liddell circles away.
Liddell throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
A head kick misses from Liddell.
Liddell throws a right and a left that Bader avoids nicely.

Bader gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Bader wants a takedown.
Charlie Liddell has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ryan Bader.
Bader is trying to drag Liddell to the mat but Liddell just about manages to keep his footing. He used the ropes to his advantage there.
Liddell tries to circle away but Bader has him pinned against the ropes.
Bader working some nice short punches in the clinch.
Bader putting his Muay Thai to good use. He has Liddell in a tight clinch and is doing some damage with knees to the body.
Liddell tries to break free but Bader pushes him back against the ropes.
Liddell can't break the clinch.
Liddell is pressed up against the ropes. Bader has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Liddell down to the mat. Liddell avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Bader will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Bader doesn't manage to clinch there - Liddell circles away.
Liddell throws a series of punches but Bader avoids them all with ease.
Bader shoots for a takedown but Liddell saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Bader fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Liddell falls off balance throwing a combination

and Bader decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Liddell's guard.
Liddell is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Bader dives into side control.

Bader is working to tighten is grip on Liddell's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. Liddell has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Bader is really squeezing tight and eventually Liddell passes out! Bader breaks the hold and jumps onto the ropes to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:48 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Ryan Bader!
