PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Alexandru Lungu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul Stewart (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Paul Stewart was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Alexandru Lungu!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Paul Stewart!
The judges for this bout are Valeri Chadov, Aleksandr Martynov and Konstantin Menshow.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Stewart looks for a takedown but Lungu sprawls well.
Lungu has his takedown stuffed
and Stewart counters with a head kick.

Lungu is working an open guard so Stewart takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Stewart tries to clinch but Lungu moves out of range.

Lungu darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Lungu is looking for a kimura but Stewart is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Lungu to get the leverage.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Stewart dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Stewart shoots for a double leg takedown but Lungu sprawls well. He's pushed Stewart's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Lungu looking to break Stewart's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Stewart remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Lungu will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!
Lungu is not going to allow Stewart to sit and survive in this position.

Stewart just trying to survive but Lungu is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish.
Stewart tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Lungu avoids the attempt from Stewart to control.
Stewart bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
Lungu might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Stewart wants to control from the top but Lungu keeps moving.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Lungu tries to land a sweep but no joy.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Lungu's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Stewart seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Despite being in the dominant position, Paul Stewart just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Lungu drops back, looking for a kneebar! Stewart looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Stewart looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Stewart!

Stewart shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Lungu as he avoids it easily.

Stewart tries to close the distance and clinch up but Lungu swats him away and circles back towards the center.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Stewart holds on tight, trying to prevent any damage.

Lungu goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Stewart has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Lungu but great work by Stewart.

Lungu changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Stewart tries to avoid it but Lungu manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Stewart to the ground. Stewart escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
The fight stays on the outside here - Stewart looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Paul Stewart showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Stewart sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Lungu's guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Stewart ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Stewart no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Lungu is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Stewart is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Stewart has escaped and now he's on top!
Stewart stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Lungu swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Lungu closes the distance and clinches up with Stewart, looking for a takedown. Lungu pushes Stewart against the cage but Stewart circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Alexandru Lungu has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Paul Stewart is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Stewart closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Well Stewart has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
