Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Latish Festin! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
19 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Hiro Miyagi! The judges for this bout are Shigeki Fujiwara, Yasuomi Hirokawa and Kenichi Hosakawa.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Festin shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Miyagi as he avoids it easily. Festin tries to close the distance and clinch but Miyagi swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Festin is trying hard to land a takedown here. Miyagi sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Miyagi fails to land with a series of punches.
Festin shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Miyagi as he jumps to the side. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Latish Festin. That's going to take a lot out of him. Miyagi moves in looking to clinch but Festin pushes him off. Miyagi keeps the fight on the outside. Miyagi ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face. Miyagi fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Festin sprawls well initially but Miyagi persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Miyagi lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears. Miyagi landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Festin has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Miyagi is working away from the top position though. Miyagi looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
That's one minute gone in the round. Festin is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Miyagi scoring with strikes to the body and head. Miyagi slips a nice elbow through Festin's hands, connecting with Festin's forehead. Miyagi is nestled in close to Festin, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Festin trying to control but Miyagi postures up.
Festin knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Miyagi on the ground. Festin has hold of Miyagi's hands but Miyagi slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow. Ground and pound from Miyagi. Miyagi is nestled in close to Festin, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Miyagi not landing any meaningful shots this time. Festin is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Miyagi is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Festin defends it well. Festin is breathing heavily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Miyagi seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Miyagi missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Festin actively working from the bottom here. Festin is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Miyagi scores with a couple of nice shots. Miyagi seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Festin does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Miyagi looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Festin with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Festin is rocked! Well, if Miyagi is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Oh Festin is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!! Miyagi has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Festin defend it? Miyagi steps over the head and cranks it - Festin is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Miyagi!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:54 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Hiro Miyagi! Hiro Miyagi retains his welterweight title!
