Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Bryan Hawk! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Maike Paker! The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Eliza Hachem and John Mangel.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Excellent takedown into side control there by Hawk. Hawk decides to take the fight back to the feet. A bone on bone clash there as Paker blocks the leg kick.
Paker shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Hawk gets full guard. Paker preventing the sweep. Paker wants to get up but he can't break Hawk's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. Paker trying to control the position from guard on top but Hawk is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Hawk looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Hawk scrambles and gets back to his feet.
Hawk swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Hawk moves forwards but Paker connects with a nice, crisp jab.
That's one minute gone in the round. Hawk scores with a takedown into Paker's guard. Hawk preventing the sweep. Hawk is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position. Hawk is breathing heavily. Paker wants to get back to his feet but Hawk is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Paker is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Paker wants to stand and escape but Hawk is having none of it. Paker wants to sweep but no luck. Hawk slips nicely into half guard. Hawk content to control rather than advance.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Hawk passes to side control. Hawk controls the position. Paker tries to get back to half guard but can't. Hawk decides to take the fight back to the feet. Paker displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Hawk. Paker scores a takedown into full mount! Hawk sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though. Hawk is on the bottom, trying to hold on to half guard. He's throwing a few small shots here, to keep his opponent honest.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Paker is keen to just control but Hawk is a slippery customer. Hawk is trying to stand back up but Paker is controlling him
Hawk taking some punishment here, with Paker in his half guard. Paker not landing any meaningful shots this time. Hawk gets back to full guard.
Hawk wants to stand and escape but Paker is having none of it. Paker is in close to Hawk's body, working some short punches and elbows.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Hawk darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard. Hawk trying to control the action but Paker is working from the bottom. Well, if Hawk is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Hawk trying to control from Paker's half guard. Paker has other ideas though and has regained full guard. Hawk trying to control but Paker is working from the bottom. Paker is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Hawk stands and steps away. Paker gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. The fight moves into the clinch position. Paker tries a body shot but Hawk blocks it.
Hawk can't break the clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Bryan Hawk dominated that round. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Paker on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot. Hawk closes the distance and clinches up with Paker, looking for a takedown. Hawk pushes Paker against the cage but Paker circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Excellent takedown into side control there by Paker. Hawk is trying to get back to half guard. Paker wants to lay and pray for a moment but Hawk keeps working. Hawk is trying to get back to half guard. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Paker trying to control the position but Hawk is working away. Hawk is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Hawk tries for a takedown but Paker sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Paker moves into the clinch. Paker struggles to land a body shot inside as Hawk controls his hands.
Paker breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Horrible takedown by Paker or perhaps it was just good defense by Hawk which made him look bad. Hawk shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Hawk stands up from guard. Let's bang!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Hawk scores with a leg kick.
Paker shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard. Paker is looking to advance position but Hawk won't allow it. Paker thows a huge punch but Hawk dodges it nicely.
Paker is looking to take a break and control but Hawk is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Bryan Hawk overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Hawk regains full guard. Nicely done. Hawk lands with a heel strike from the guard.
Hawk has thrown up a leg looking for a triangle. Paker doesn't defend quickly enough and Hawk has managed to lock this one up! Can Paker escape?! NO! He's tapping out! Damn, that was a quick submission - congrats to Hawk on a fantastic submission victory.
