Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Katsuyori Shibata (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Benny Howards (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Shibata's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, Monster I by Balzac. Benny Howards is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Benny Howards!
The judges for this bout are Hugh Johnson, Damien Edna and Steve Erwin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shibata lands a lovely overhand right.
Shibata sizes up Howards with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.

Shibata is trying to get an arm triangle but Howards is defending well.

Shibata is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Howards is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Howards throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Howards tries to close the distance and clinch but Shibata swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Shibata misses with a wild body shot.
Shibata avoids a low kick by using good footwork.

Shibata looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Howards!

Shibata goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Howards turns into him and now he's in Shibata's guard.

Shibata throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Howards escapes and throws Shibata's legs to the side, diving into side control!
Howards tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Shibata is trying to improve his position.

Howards keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

Shibata has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Shibata connects with a nice short shot to Howards's temple.

Shibata is pressing down on Howards's thigh, looking to free his foot. Howards is holding on for now.
Howards makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Howards.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Shibata is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Howards is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Howards has escaped and now he's on top!

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. And we move into the final round!

Howards wants to clinch up but Shibata keeps it at a distance.
Howards fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Shibata manages to avoid it.

Howards closes the distance and lands a one-two.
A telegraphed right hand from Howards misses the target.
Howards has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Howards there as he acknowledges the shot.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Howards is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

I would just about give that final round to Benny Howards.
I think Shibata has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
