PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Matty Hews (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Justin Stephens (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the fighters buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Matty Hews!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Justin Stephens!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Gwen Towbar and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A combination from Hews does no damage.

Stephens clinches with his opponent.
Stephens tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.

Hews drags the fight down to the ground.
Stephens stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hews swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Stephens is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Hews looking to hit a scissor sweep but Stephens is one step ahead there.
Stephens trying to control the position from guard on top but Hews is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Stephens throws a strike but Hews rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Hews wants to control from the top but Stephens keeps moving.

Stephens looking to control.
Hews controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Hews misses with a body kick.
Stephens tries to clinch up but Hews circles away and keeps his distance.

Hews rushes Stephens and presses him up against the cage.
Stephens jumps guard but Hews stands there with Stephens around his waist. Stephens gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Stephens tries to pull guard but Hews won't allow it.
Hews tries to break free but Stephens pushes him back against the cage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Stephens escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Hews misses with a double jab.
Stephens keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Hews fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Hews is breathing heavily.
Stephens misses with a double jab.
Stephens stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Stephens wants it to stay on the feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Matty Hews. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Hews throws and low kick but Stephens moves out of range easily.
Hews shoots for a double leg takedown but Stephens sprawls well. He's pushed Hews's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Stephens goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.

Stephens has taken the fight to the clinch.

Stephens has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Hews uses from the top position.

Stephens has his hands on Hews's head, controlling the position.
Hews preventing the sweep.
Stephens is trying to control the position but Hews postures up.
Hews won't allow Stephens to sweep him here.
Hews has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Stephens is proving hard to escape from.

Stephens has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Hews can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Stephens is trying to control the position but Hews postures up.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Stephens!
Stephens throws a left and a right that both miss

and Hews counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Stephens's guard now.
Hews prevents Stephens from getting back to his feet.
Stephens is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Stephens has his foot on Hews's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Hews works his way back into a safe position though.
And that�s the end of the round � the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Justin Stephens will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

and Stephens decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Hews's guard.

Stephens might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Hews kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Stephens is looking to advance position but Hews has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Stephens keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Hews sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!

Hews looking to secure an arm triangle but Stephens defends it well.

Hews looking to ground and pound but Stephens is blocking nicely.
Stephens avoids a strike by Hews and manages to complete a very nice reversal in the process, to end up in Hews's guard! Fantastic escape!

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Stephens trying to pass the guard but Hews defending well.

Stephens gets to his feet - back to striking we go!
Stephens looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Hews is fending him off so far but Stephens persists. Nope, Hews circles away and we're back to standing.
Hews walks into a straight right hand from Stephens.

Stephens has managed to clinch.
Stephens keeps control of Hews as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Hews tries for a takedown but Stephens manages to get underhooks.
Stephens lands a right hand that snaps the head of Hews backwards.
Hews is working for takedown but Stephens is calmly controlling the position for now.

Stephens breaks from the clinch.
Stephens tests Hews's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Stephens feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Hews's calf.
Stephens dips to his left and cracks Hews with an uppercut!
Stephens looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Hews is fending him off so far but Stephens persists. Nope, Hews circles away and we're back to standing.
Stephens throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Hews's waist but Hews gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Stephens off to one side.
Matty Hews has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Justin Stephens.

Stephens avoids a punch combination nicely.
Stephens fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Hews misses with a telegraphed body shot
and Stephens counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Stephens is trying hard to land a takedown here. Hews sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Justin Stephens showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Justin Stephens comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Stephens has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
