Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Paul Bourque!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 8 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, DJ Penn!
The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Luis Engracia and Emerson Jorge.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penn throws a nice outside leg kick.
Bourque throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Penn.
Bourque throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
DJ Penn seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Penn ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Bourque swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Penn shoots in for a takedown but Bourque shows good takedown defense.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The fight stays on the outside here - Penn looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Penn throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Bourque's waist but Bourque gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Penn off to one side.
Paul Bourque has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of DJ Penn.
The fighters circling - Bourque throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Penn shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Bourque as he avoids it easily.

Penn moves in looking to clinch but Bourque pushes him off.
Penn uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Bourque.

Penn loads up on a big right hand but Bourque slips the punch.
Penn walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Bourque swings for the body but Penn moves out of range.
Penn staying out of range there.
The fighters circling - Penn throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Penn tries a low kick but Bourque avoids it.
Penn is looking to clinch.

and Bourque connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Bourque swings away with a body shot that misses
and Penn makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

Bourque thows a left - swing and a miss!

Penn shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Penn was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Bourque wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Penn.

Penn has control of Bourque's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Bourque regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Penn thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!
Bourque knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Penn on the ground.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Penn wants to finish this one by submission but Bourque is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Penn.

Penn is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Bourque has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Bourque!

Penn is trying to keep Bourque in close.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Penn manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Bourque is trying to escape the mount.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Penn tries to control but Bourque wriggling away.

DJ Penn showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

and Bourque makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Penn shoots in and drives through. Bourque sprawls well.

Penn closes the distance and clinches up with Bourque, looking for a takedown. Penn pushes Bourque against the cage but Bourque circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Penn uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Bourque has time to react.

Bourque tries to buck Penn off but Penn is having none of it.
Bourque on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Bourque tries to get out of the position.
Penn throws a strike aimed at the side of Bourque's head but Bourque avoids it well.
Bourque manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Bourque is concentrating on defense, preventing Penn from advancing position.
Paul Bourque is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Penn is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Bourque has managed to free his arm - good work.
Bourque regains full guard. Nicely done.

Bourque is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Penn stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Bourque swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Bourque keeping moving, preventing Penn from controlling successfully.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Penn trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

I would just about give that final round to DJ Penn.
