PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Frosty McPenos (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Serizawa Tamao (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). McPenos's entrance music is "Don't Call Me White" by Nofx. A fine choice. Serizawa Tamao is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Serizawa Tamao!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Tamao tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Tamao fails with a takedown attempt.
McPenos tries to score a power double leg takedown but Tamao sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten McPenos somewhat.
Tamao shoots and misses

and McPenos counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Tamao's guard now.
Tamao seems keen to control McPenos's posture.
McPenos slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Tamao wants to sweep here but McPenos controlling him for the moment.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
McPenos tries to free his leg and advance position but Tamao is retaining full guard.

McPenos postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Tamao is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of McPenos, into his guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Tamao works over McPenos with some ground and pound from guard.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
McPenos wants to sweep but no luck.
McPenos keeping moving, preventing Tamao from controlling successfully.

Tamao drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but McPenos manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Tamao has McPenos in his guard.
Tamao is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

McPenos drops back, looking for a kneebar! Tamao looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Tamao looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Tamao!
McPenos is breathing heavily.
You can see the frustration on McPenos's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
McPenos manages to work his way to half guard, despite Tamao's best efforts.

Tamao escapes and gets back to his feet.
Tamao tries to bum rush McPenos with a series of wild strikes but McPenos uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Tamao closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Tamao tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
Tamao working to pass to mount. He's got his hand pressing down on McPenos's thigh. McPenos counters though and makes it back to full guard.

McPenos had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Tamao defends it easily.
McPenos is trying to control the position from the bottom.

McPenos is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

McPenos is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Tamao is aware though and is defending well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Tamao wants to control the pace but McPenos is squirming around nicely.

Tamao lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.

Tamao stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.

Tamao stands up and beckons McPenos to join him on the feet.

and McPenos decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Tamao's guard.
McPenos with a flurry of punches that miss.
McPenos seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
McPenos postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

McPenos controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
McPenos wants to pass the guard but Tamao is keeping the position.

McPenos is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Tamao loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Tamao clinches but McPenos breaks the clinch

and McPenos counters by moving into the clinch.
McPenos tries to pull guard but Tamao won't allow it.
Tamao tries a knee to the head but McPenos blocks it.

Tamao wants to get up but he can't break McPenos's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

A close second round but Serizawa Tamao will probably get the nod - 10:9.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

McPenos swings around for an armbar but Tamao sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into McPenos's guard.

McPenos is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Tamao defends well.

McPenos tries to lock up and control but Tamao gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

McPenos is bucking up trying to escape but Tamao cracks him with another couple of good strikes.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

McPenos slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
McPenos trying to hold on to Tamao's head to control him but Tamao postures up.
Tamao tries to stand but his arm is trapped.

Tamao has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of McPenos is proving hard to escape from.

Tamao stands and steps away. McPenos gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

McPenos is looking for a kimura here.
McPenos perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

Tamao is not content to let McPenos control the position.

McPenos is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Tamao sees it coming and defends easily.
McPenos has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

McPenos is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Tamao has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Tamao!

And that's the end of the fight!

Well McPenos has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
