And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Nate Gouldmeister!
The judges for this bout are Winston Howard, Damien Edna and Eliza Hachem.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gouldmeister avoids the head kick by Johnson.
Gouldmeister fails with a takedown attempt.
Nice takedown defense from Johnson. No joy for Gouldmeister on that attempt.

Gouldmeister feints and as Johnson raises his hands in defense, Gouldmeister changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Johnson wants to get back to his feet but Gouldmeister is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Johnson kicks Gouldmeister off and gets to his feet.
Gouldmeister fails with a takedown attempt.
Fred Johnson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Nate Gouldmeister.
Gouldmeister tries to clinch but Johnson moves out of range.
Gouldmeister misses with a takedown attempt - Johnson sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Nate Gouldmeister seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Gouldmeister shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Johnson sprawls well. Johnson wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Gouldmeister gets slowly back to his feet.

Johnson leaves Gouldmeister with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Johnson closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Gouldmeister to the mat! Gouldmeister manages to get full guard.

Johnson stands up and waves to Gouldmeister to follow him.

Johnson looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Johnson is pressing down on Gouldmeister's thigh, looking to free his foot. Gouldmeister is holding on for now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Johnson trying to control the action but Gouldmeister is working from the bottom.
Johnson is looking to advance position but Gouldmeister won't allow it.
Still in half guard, Johnson seems content to control.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Johnson decides to stand back up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Gouldmeister misses with a takedown

and Johnson counters with a shoot takedown. Gouldmeister fights it but they end up in guard.

Johnson wants to control from the top but Gouldmeister keeps moving.

Johnson got a little sloppy there for a moment and Gouldmeister has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Johnson has managed to get both his arms back between Gouldmeister's legs - danger averted.

Johnson slips nicely into half guard.

Johnson stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Johnson goes for a high kick. It partially lands.
Johnson lands with an uppercut that bounces Gouldmeister off the cage and back into rage.
Fred Johnson is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

and Johnson counters with a nice double leg into side control. Gouldmeister won't be happy with that.
Fred Johnson overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Johnson stands up and we're back to a striking position.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Gouldmeister is looking for a kimura but Johnson is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Gouldmeister to get the leverage.

Gouldmeister is nestled in close to Johnson, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Gouldmeister shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Gouldmeister drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Gouldmeister jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Johnson is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Gouldmeister is controlling him.

Gouldmeister postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

Gouldmeister misses with a takedown

and Johnson decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Gouldmeister's guard.
Fred Johnson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Nate Gouldmeister.
Johnson is looking to stand up but Gouldmeister won't let him.

Johnson drops back, looking for a kneebar! Gouldmeister looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Gouldmeister looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Gouldmeister!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Gouldmeister is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Johnson knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Johnson throws an overhand right that lands on Gouldmeister's shoulder, as Gouldmeister tries to avoid the shot.

Gouldmeister closes the distance and clinches.

Johnson manages to break the clinch.
Gouldmeister shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Johnson counters with a two punch combo.
Johnson lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.

Johnson pushes Gouldmeister up against the cage in a clinch.
Johnson is trying to maintain a safe position but Gouldmeister gets an underhook and turns Johnson into the cage.

Johnson's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Gouldmeister shoots and misses

and Johnson counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Gouldmeister!
Gouldmeister is wriggling around trying to escape.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Johnson has control of Gouldmeister's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Gouldmeister regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Johnson throws a wild left hand from mount and Gouldmeister manages to wriggle his way back to half guard.

Johnson working to pass to mount. He's got his hand pressing down on Gouldmeister's thigh. Gouldmeister counters though and makes it back to full guard.

Gouldmeister looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Gouldmeister not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Gouldmeister working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Johnson.
Johnson has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Johnson drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Gouldmeister dives on top into guard.

Gouldmeister drops back looking for a leg! Johnson is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Johnson manages to kick Gouldmeister off! Gouldmeister jumps back into Johnson's guard.

Gouldmeister is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Johnson has his feet on Gouldmeister's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.

Johnson gets caught flat footed, as Gouldmeister shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Johnson is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Gouldmeister content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.

Gouldmeister prevents Johnson from getting back to his feet.

Johnson is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
Gouldmeister tries for a takedown but Johnson manages to get underhooks.

Johnson gets control of Gouldmeister's arms and successfully pulls guard. Johnson will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Johnson is trying to escape and get back to his feet.

Well Johnson has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
