PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Johnny Tran (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and BJ Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Johnny Tran!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, BJ Penn!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penn sizes up Tran with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.
Penn takes a head kick and keeps coming.

Tran drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Tran throws a strike aimed at the side of Penn's head but Penn avoids it well.
Penn tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Tran decides to stand back up. Tran steps back and let's Penn get back to his feet.
Penn misses with an uppercut. Tran saw that one coming.
Penn scores with a jab.
Penn fails to land with a series of punches.
Tran throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Tran slips a jab and a cross from Penn.
Tran closes the distance and clinches up with Penn, looking for a takedown. Tran pushes Penn against the cage but Penn circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
No joy there for Penn, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Penn throws a right and a left that Tran avoids nicely.
Penn misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Tran fails to land the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Johnny Tran. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Tran closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Penn to the mat! Penn manages to get full guard.

Penn is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Penn is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Tran is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Tran slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The referee warns Penn that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.

Tran cracks Penn with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.

Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Penn moves into full guard.
Tran has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Penn working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Tran doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Tran manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Tran is sitting in close to Penn's body. Penn has gone for a guillotine from the bottom. Oh damn, that looks pretty tight! Tran is panicking - it looks like this one could be all over! Yes, Tran is tapping! That was a very nice submission by Penn.
