Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Alexander Connelly! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Don Self! The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Yves DeLean and Elvis Blanc.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Connelly keeps the fight on the outside. Connelly lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head. Self just misses with a punch to the body.
Connelly tries to close the distance and clinch up but Self swats him away and circles back towards the center. Alexander Connelly seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Self lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin. Connelly moves in looking to clinch but Self pushes him off. Connelly closes the distance looking to clinch and Self counters with a nice double leg into half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Connelly tries to get to full guard but Self has control of the leg. Self is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound. Self looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. Connelly moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Self controls the pace of the fight for a moment. Connelly wants to sweep here but Self controlling him for the moment. Self is stalling in the full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Connelly has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Self can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Connelly looking for a sweep. Not yet Connelly, not yet. Connelly looking to control.
Self is pushing down on Connelly's leg trying to pass to half guard. Connelly is fighting to maintain full guard but Self has managed to sneak the leg through. The fighters are battling for position here. Connelly manages to regain full guard. Nice work. Connelly has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Self can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Self trying to control but Connelly is working from the bottom. Connelly wants to sweep but no luck.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Self wants to get up but he can't break Connelly's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. Self trying to control but Connelly is working from the bottom. Connelly pulls Self in to control the position. Self sitting in guard, not really doing much. Connelly looking to hit a scissor sweep but Self is one step ahead there.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Self fails with an attempt to clinch.
Connelly tries to clinch up.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Connelly scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. Connelly content to control rather than advance. Connelly decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet. Self shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Connelly but Connelly pushes him off and we're back to square one. Connelly shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Self manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage. Self looks gassed! Connelly passes Self's left leg - he's now in half guard. Connelly is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Self is just riding it out for now. Connelly eventually gives up the hold. Connelly works his way into full mount!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Connelly prevents Self from getting the reversal. Connelly controlling his opponent. You get the feeling that Self really doesn't like being in this position too much.
Connelly jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Self is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Self and Connelly has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Self wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done! And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Alexander Connelly will probably get the nod. Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!
Connelly gets in close and instigates a clinch. Connelly is pressed up against the cage. Self has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Connelly down to the mat. Connelly avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance. Self shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Connelly wants to clinch but Self slips to the side and Self counters with a nice double leg into guard. Connelly is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Self has his hands clasped together but Connelly extends an breaks Self's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Connelly.
